We were lucky to catch up with Kari Presley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kari, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Naming a company can be a bit of an exhausting task. You want it to express a part of who you are and you want it to be unique. I had a long list of names in my notebook. Names like KB Photos, Kari Presley Photography, Desert Rose Photography, Bluebonnet Photography and more. I really wanted something that would be something I would want to keep forever. So I started thinking about when my love of photography began and who had the biggest impact in my early years. And that was my Bebe (my grandma). I was always stealing her camera and she gave me my first camera. So it was a no brainer to me that my company needed to represent that. She calls me Klayne which is my first initial and my middle name and that how Klayne Photography was named. I cant imagine ever wanting to change it and it fits who I am.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Im Kari of Klayne Photography! Im an elopement, wedding and portrait photographer based in Texas but I travel all over. Capturing real and raw moments so you can relive the moment over and over again is my approach to telling this chapter of your story. No two people are the same which means no two sessions or weddings are the same and I don’t treat them as they are the same. Its important to me to make sure the images I capture are unique to each individual or couple. I love making my clients feel beautiful because everyone deserves to know how beautiful they are. I also love love traveling for session. Even if its not an elopement or destination wedding I always try to get my clients to make and adventure out of their session. I find it makes the session more of an experience and a memory rather than just a photoshoot.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Referrals hands down. How you treat your current and past clients will do so much for your business. Its the best form of marketing in my opinion and the best part is its free.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think its a lesson that can be taught in so many areas. But I had to unlearn trying to be a cookie cutter photographer. It might sound weird but some educators in the photography business will try to make you feel like you need to shoot, edit and perform business in a certain way. And for a short time I felt like that’s what I needed to do. It took one mentor to teach me to be the photographer I wanted to be and that I don’t have to be exactly the same as every other photographer to be successful.
