We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kari Massey. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kari below.
Kari , appreciate you joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
I’ve recently covered Mavi’s “Laughing so hard, it hurts.” tour. That had to one of the most meaningful moments of my career purely because of the atmosphere due to the fans, and respective thanks to Zay, Mavi and all of KS.
Also shoutout the incredible Ziggywaters for allowing me in on their brilliance that is Doonie Deluxxx. It was truly an honor shooting for such an amazing work of music.
I’ve also shot my first EDM concert for Monster Energy for Boogie.T . Everyone from Monster Energy to the artist and venue helped me in every way possible.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a published photographer from Detroit Michigan. I capture concerts to fashion brands. I’ve been taking photos for 8 years now and have had the opportunity to shoot for 21 Savage, Trippie Redd, Pierre bourne and many other top artist in the music industry. Being from Detroit, I’ve been able to work with Detroit’s major artist such as Babyface Ray, Icewear vezzo and GT etc.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
At one point in my career I strived for consistency but in that process, I burned myself out. Took small break and when I came back, my post were different. I always believed it would be my work with other artist that would be perceived better by the internet, but it was my personal work that I sought out to create to always did the best performance. So now I take my time posting and view that process differently, letting people just organically interact with it.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I worked in a Dollar Tree in 2018 and I despised it and I didn’t know if full time photography was the right move. I risked it and eventually I got booked & paid for my first concert and it was significantly bigger than my other job’s check and I knew I could pursue this as a career especially since I had genuine love for what I was doing.
