Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kari Brackett. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kari, appreciate you joining us today. It’s easy to look at a business or industry as an outsider and assume it’s super profitable – but we’ve seen over and over again in our conversation with folks that most industries have factors that make profitability a challenge. What’s biggest challenge to profitability in your industry?
Expense associated with self care is one of the first items individuals tend to let go of when budgets get tight. It is also one of the least chosen investments for most-especially those who are new to taking time for wellness. Yoga studios rely on students committed to wellness to come through the door-they are how we keep the lights on. When cutting costs a lot of people tend not to consider personal wellbeing through exercise and meditation a necessity; sometimes regular students will reduce attendance in these times. Getting people to know the value of this practice is another big challenge-they have to give the work a chance to understand this could impact their life in powerful ways beyond what they imagine. Some may not be willing to try something new, or afraid to step into a place of slight discomfort not knowing the infinite discovery available to them. Owning and operating a yoga studio is a constant mix of retention and finding new clients..
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
When I began Vital Vibes Yoga I intended to keep the business transient. This vision expanded throughout 2021. There is an abundance of joy that comes from being in the studio with the other instructors and members. I love practicing alongside each of them, learning from them, and conversing casually and sometimes deeply between classes and lessons. It is an honor to get to know the people of this community. The trust and support they hold in this space speaks to the solid foundation of pure intrinsic motivation Vital Vibes was built on. I longed to share the gift yoga is to me to anyone was open since my early days of practice. I wanted to create a space where people would immediately feel welcome and at ease. I intended to empower other instructors to flourish and shine. All of this from a space of love- a deep pain turned to purpose-creating a rippling affect through each life touched.
In 2021 I was stunted, dropped to the floor quite literally. I lost my brother, Devin, tragically. I prayed his demons and mental illness never return to haunt another. I vowed to do my best to live in a way that may alleviate others struggles & share tools that just maybe could abridge another’s troubles.
Through love and this practice I pushed forward and decided I was no longer going to move the way fear made me move, I was going to move the way love makes me move. Moving in love I am able to keep my brother near, for what really separates any of us is fear. When I see others & I honor them for who they are, despite any perceived shortcomings & without jealousy or envy, I see that they are worthy of compassion, care, and love.
Without attachment I trust others see the same in the authentic and vulnerable state I have opened myself to.
Here is where we find peace. Here is where we stay connected. Here is where the vision & mission of Vital Vibes comes to fruition: To create a yoga and wellness pillar in the community that is home to all levels of practitioners. Recognizing everyone has a unique path to follow, this timeless tradition is shared in an all inclusive space. Straight from the heart with passion & sincerity to help those who’s paths we cross feel their best physically, mentally, and spiritually if they choose!
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Check in often, let them know you are there and on their level. No one human is better than another-this should be especially true of those we entrust with our business. Support, uplift, and empower with encouraging words and presence. Encourage them to move in ways they feel inspired. Show up for them instead of only asking them to show up for you.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Authenticity. Be real, people respect this as it encourages them to be free in who they are as well.
