We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karenn Murga. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karenn below.
Karenn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What do you think it takes to be successful?
Success is a self-made situation, anyone can achieve it. You have to commit to your goals and vision. I say that because the road isn’t easy. I have days where I don’t want to work or be on social media. I have days where I am exhausted and have only slept a few hours, but I get up and work. Do I have days where I cry and want to give up? Of course! But, I know that in order to achieve the success I want I have to be focused and put the work in. You are capable of being successful, you just have to do what it takes and not give up on yourself and your dreams.

Karenn, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Karenn and I am a designer and creator of modern event decor and custom gifts. B|A began in 2016 offering breakfast boxes and custom giant balloons. B|A has since grown as a company and now offers many more options including laser engraved gifts, event decor, and sign rentals.
I grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and started working in the family business at an early age. I saw my parents lifestyle and knew that I wanted to follow in their footsteps. The road was never clear to me though, I knew what I wanted but didn’t know how. My family owns a successful beauty salon and everyone kept insisting to me that the road to success was to work with them. Yet, I always knew in my heart that I wanted something different. I learned from my mom that in order to be successful you have to love what you do, and I just didn’t love the salon industry. In 2012 I had my son, and my dreams were put in the backseat for a bit until 2016 when I had to quit my nine to five job because my husband and I were not making ends meet. I then talked to a family member and we began with the company in two different cities. I honestly started it as a passive thing, I had no idea how much I would love designing custom items.
Through the years I have been adding more items and am constantly learning new software and designs to bring my clients trending items. I love being able to help my clients bring their ideas to life and create something unique for them. During these years, I have had clients from around the world: Africa, Spain, Mexico, and Latin America and well known artists and celebrities. I sometimes look back and think how my life have been if I wouldn’t have taken the chance with this company. As of May, I have also hired an assistant. This may seem small to someone, but to a woman with dreams this is a huge goal for me. I want other women to see my company and be inspired to start their own. I created B|A as a young mom and wife, overcoming many obstacles and self doubt. I want that to be a motivation to young girls that if you set your mind, you can achieve your dreams.
If you are not familiar with B|A make sure to follow us on social media. I take pride in always offering trending items in my company. I want to create gifts, signage and decor that has a meaningful purpose. That each one is unique for each and every client! Everything created here is about purpose, meaning, joy, and customization!

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The biggest thing I have had to unlearn is to take the help. I would go crazy trying to do everything myself and not accepting help from friends and family. I thought that by accepting the help I was failing in a way, and I also didn’t want to bother other people with my problems. I have been building friendships with other business owners and have since started accepting the help and have now hired an assistant. I came to a realization that I couldn’t grow my business to the level I wanted without help.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I always ensure my clients are completely satisfied once they receive my products. The conversations don’t end once I’m done with the order, I try to create a relationship with each customer. I believe that by doing so, my own clients refer me to others and share my work. Social media is a big tool for growth, but we sometimes forget that word of mouth is also such a huge tool. I now have constant new clients and most of them are through word of mouth.
