We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Karen Tedeschi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Karen below.
Karen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
Best Client Advice
I had a woman who suffered from headaches, chronic neck pain, numbness, and tingling down both arms as well as pain in her feet after being in a couple of car accidents.
She always thought that she would be in pain. When we started working and correcting the injuries that never got corrected, she started to be able to stand up straight, breathe easier, and stopped having headaches.
My advice was to never give up, be open to your body’s potential to heal, and take your vitamins.
We had to look at all of her and adjust everything from her wrist and elbows, to her shoulders, neck and cranium. We had to work on the whole body and bit, by bit, by bit, she was aware of it changing and the pain going away.
I said take your vitamins because we needed to give her some nutrients to help the old injuries heal. Even though taking supplements wasn’t one of her favorite things, (she’s not the only one like that), she did it consistently and this gave the body the healing that it needed.
Karen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
When I first started Chiropractic, I did so almost by accident. I didn’t grow up knowing about Chiropractic or having adjustments, but then when I was in my twenties, I met some chiropractors. At the time, I had been doing massage therapy and became very interested in anything that had to do with Physical Medicine.
Eventually, I decided to go to Life College to study chiropractic, liked it, and could see myself doing it for a long period of time. In today’s language, that would mean that I was following my heart, because I just found something that spoke to me and pursued it!
Not only did I study Chiropractic, but also Applied Kinesiology, Brimhall technique, Cranial-Sacral Therapy, Nutrition, Blood work, and Pranic Healing. Applied Kinesiology is a system of looking at the nervous system, figuring out what’s wrong with it or what’s not functioning correctly, and then correcting it. My practice is integrative, so not only would you receive a physical adjustment during your visit, but we also might go over nutrition and supplementation and order tests to get concrete information about your unique body.
I treat patients for a wide variety of issues and often complex problems that other practitioners have not been able to solve. This includes
*Neck pain
*Lower and Upper Back pain
*Trauma from Car Accidents
*Sports injuries, falls, strains and sprains
*Migraines
*Sleeping problems
*Digestive Upset
*Irritability
*Hormonal Imbalance
Overall, when you come visit me at Advanced Wellness, I help restore your body to balance and look at all the varying factors contributing to your unique pain experience.
I am proud that after 30 years, I still love what I do. I am most proud that people are getting their lives back. After multiple accidents, they first think they’re always going to be in pain and then when that pain starts to resolve, it is an awesome feeling.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I first started practicing, I took insurance as well as cash patients. Over time, a big pivot I went through was going from accepting Insurance to only being a cash based practice. I believe that insurance companies negatively impact my patient’s care because they have a rigid structure for how a chiropractor can practice. I sought to seamlessly integrate nutrition, testing and adjustments for a complete treatment, individualized for each person.
My practice was expanding quickly, so when I decided to pivot, it took maybe a year to change. First you had to start saying no to people and then explaining to them why you had become a cash based practice.
It turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made because my patients can get the care they need in a timely fashion.
A great resource if you want to learn about the insurance system is the book “An American Sickness: How Healthcare Became Big Business and How You Can Take It Back” by Elisabeth Rosenthal.
Today, I am continuing to come up with ways to make information more accessible to people. This is one of the reasons why we have the weekly newsletter, social media, and an online store. There’s always somewhere that people can start to learn about alternative therapies and different options for health and healing. People can join the newsletter for free where we break down elements of the body, testing and tips for healing.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start?
I was one of those people who automatically went out on my own, so after school, I didn’t really have any initial capital. I rented a room that was affordable from some other chiropractors who were in practice. I didn’t have any employees for a couple of years, and I borrowed a table, a computer, and a telephone.
Over time I was able to purchase my own table, computer, and phone. Several years later, I moved into a larger space of my own which was still small, but then I had somebody who would help me part time. Fast forward 30 years later, I built a thriving practice and created Advanced Wellness of Atlanta, a wellness center with other like-minded practitioners.
