Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Rosenbloom. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Karen thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk about social media – do you manage your own or do you have someone or a company that handles it for you? Why did you make the choice you did?
These days, content creation on social media involves much more than simply filming, editing, and posting. Content creators must study algorithms, negotiate contractual agreements, dissect analytics, and adapt to consumer culture– all while creating unique and individualized content. The transformation of social media from personal to professional requires a significant amount of knowledge, time, and dedication which makes hiring a media manager, publicist, or marketing agency a logical pursuit.
Many creators who use publicists, agents, and managers also utilize content creation as a full-time job. With that being said, I have met many professional creators, some who use management, and some who do not– so it really is a personal decision. I dedicate a lot of my time to my academic studies and therefore have yet to hire any outside managers for my platforms. However, as I grow as a content creator, it is something I am strongly considering for the near future.
Karen, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a student, classically trained chef, and food content creator based in New York City.
Cooking has always been my greatest passion, which made Culinary school a natural progression following high school. At the age of 18, I enrolled at Johnson and Wales University in Providence Rhode Island where I successfully completed an associate’s degree in Culinary Arts. Since then, my professional experience in the fine dining industry includes serving as a Garde-Manger Chef, Private Chef, and Event Caterer. I have worked in seven different professional kitchens, and each experience has taught me technical skills which not only enhance my cooking but more importantly, taught me discipline, endurance, and organizational skills.
This endurance and discipline encouraged me to pursue one of my other passions in life, writing. I began studying Creative Writing at Columbia University in the Spring of 2021. I have since immersed myself in the academic realm of literature even adopting a concentration in English. It is my ultimate goal to merge my passions for cooking and writing to connect people universally through the language of food.
In that spirit, I started a TikTok page (@Karens_cooking) around the same time I enrolled at Columbia where I share recipes, stories, and anecdotes from my professional chef endeavors. Since then, I have grown 220,000 followers and over 8 million likes.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
It is extremely rewarding to share my passion and love for food with my followers.
It has taken me years to find my voice and style as a content creator, but as a result, I put out videos and recipes I am proud of.
The greatest honor I receive as a food content creator is seeing my followers make my recipes at home. Messages I receive from people recreating my dishes fill my soul with joy. I love receiving messages saying “Hey Karen! I made your lemon goat cheese pasta and my family loved it!” or “Hey Karen! I recreated your carbonara at home but used bacon instead of guanciale and it was delicious!”
Feedback like that is the most empowering and rewarding experience a food content creator could ask for.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Success in social media is based on individuality.
My experience in professional kitchens and my degree in culinary arts makes me stand out as a food content creator. The knowledge I share with my following is reputable as it comes directly from culinary professionals or from the classroom.
I make videos depicting my day-to-day life in a professional kitchen, or recollecting recipes I was recently taught in culinary school. These experiences have helped me build a reputation as a trusted chef on TikTok.
