Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Morse. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karen, appreciate you joining us today. Do you take vacations? How do you keep things going – any advice for entrepreneurs who feel like they can’t step away from their business for a short vacation?
I just returned from a vacation recently – but I hadn’t taken even a “Staycation” or weekend getaway in over three years. It was time! Oftentimes I feel like “we” put vacations and other fun activities on the back burner. Putting work first. But to be honest, without taking a mental health break (aka vacation) regularly, we simultaneously are putting our well-being and mental health on the back burner. That’s a no-win situation. To prep for my trip, I did work many extra hours for weeks to keep ahead of the content creation for my clients to be able to truly enjoy a vacation, and when I returned from my trip I was surprised at something. I thought I’d be scrambling to get additional work completed and spinning in circles to complete work I didn’t do while on a break. But what surprised me is that I was calmer, was able to be more productive, and create better content. My stress levels had decreases, I was more mindful, and I had a more positive outlook. All of that is a winning combination for high-quality work.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I “get” how social media can be overwhelming, especially since it is THE #1 way to develop brand awareness, build relationships with customers and increase traffic to your website.
My passion for social media can be traced back to my work with GLAMOUR Magazine, where I spent significant time working on building brand awareness. As a seasoned blogger for GlamKaren.com, I am passionate about advancing social media skills for companies I’ve worked with, including Banana Republic, Soft Surroundings, Talbots, and more. Earning my Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University and my Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut, I have spent most of my career in education, gaining experiences in areas such as creativity, communication, and collaboration. I am a certified professional from Hootsuite with Social Media Marketing. I also completed coursework on social media marketing from Northwestern University. My business is a registered LLC in Ohio and is insured. I am diligent in keeping up with rules/regulations (including ADA and copyright laws) through frequent conferences and training. I have worked directly with Google, Pinterest, and Facebook.
Between managing a business, do you really have time to engage with your followers, maintain your brand’s online community awareness, create content that leads to action, schedule at optimal times… and the list goes on. I can improve what you are already doing on social media. Let me help you with proven tools I know to improve your brand and get you better results.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Creativity can take on many forms, one of which is content creation, which I do daily. It’s thrilling to apply new techniques of digital content creation for a client and see their brand awareness continue to grow and reflect the personality of their business. I find great satisfaction in determining what strategies to use to create videos and images that best mirror what my clients want to present to their followers. It’s seeing a transformation in what its social media presence was to where it’s going. There are numerous steps to build a successful and relatable online presence – many “behind the scenes” techniques and strategies (along with important legal components) that most don’t see in a single post. But I know it’s there, and I am proud of my work.
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
I recently told a friend of mine that I had just spent over an hour editing only one image (in a series) for a client, but that client didn’t even notice the edits until I shared a before/after of that specific image. It was actually quite a noticeable transformation (for the better!) when seeing both versions of the image side by side. At that moment, they got a glimpse into my “behind the scenes” detail work that makes what I do for clients an important step in the entire process. Most of the “magic” happens in a way that shouldn’t be dramatic or flashy – it should be a better/cleaner version of the original. That’s part of what I do.
