Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Kaiser. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karen, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I first learned to sew when I was in middle school but hadn’t created much since then. At the start of the pandemic when there was a need for cloth masks, I got my sewing machine out of the attic and began sewing masks to donate to first responders in the community. I made and donated over 400 masks to medical professionals, essential workers, teachers, pastors, and other individuals who needed them. Once masks became more readily available, my services were no longer needed and I began to sew and sell children’s clothing as a hobby. But my business shifted yet again in recent months after the mass shooting in Uvalde. One of my mentors encouraged me to make sure I was taking time to create things in the midst of the destruction in the world. I came up with the idea to make hair ties and sell them to raise money to end gun violence. In less than a month, I’ve raised over $350 for Moms Demand Action and continue to sew and sell hair ties and donate 100% of the proceeds to Moms Demand Action. For Pride month, I sold hair ties and donated 100% of the proceeds to Pride Frisco, a local group that works to create a community of respect, inclusion, and love for LGBTQIA+ individuals and allies in Frisco and North Texas.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am committed to “Sewing for Good” and I use my sewing skills to raise money and awareness for various causes. I am currently selling handmade hair ties and donating 100% of the proceeds to Moms Demand Action to work to end gun violence and create a safer world for all of us. In the past I have also made and donated cloth masks to first responders at the beginning of the pandemic.
I also sew custom-designed children’s clothing, mainly dresses and shirts for little girls.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth. I think people are happy with my products and like the idea of “making a purchase to make a difference”.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I don’t know many other people who “sew for good” so I think my commitment to raising awareness and money for social and cultural causes is important to people. There are plenty of places for people to buy a handmade hair tie online but I think people like to know that their money is going to support something that they believe in.
