We were lucky to catch up with Karen Juncal recently and have shared our conversation below.
Karen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
To be successful, you have to know to how to pick yourself back up & try again. You have to be ok with failing. Remain confident and move with an optimistic mindset. Don’t ever stop believing in yourself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?
Prior to leaving high school, I had a car accident & that completely changed my state of mind. I ended up in a dark place full of doubt & zero hope for myself. I didn’t have a clear idea of what I wanted to do. I was working in cleaning houses & I completely felt like a nobody. With time, I managed to look into dermatology since I was so into skincare but the fact that I needed to continue with college just crossed out that option. So that’s when i learned what an esthetician was & I found Medspa Institute & immediately scheduled a tour. At the tour, I felt a spark and continued to enroll & just like that I was in esthetician school. While at school, I learned that I was not as interested in skincare as I thought. Waxing had won my heart; the conversations, the vibes, the spark that it brought to me that just told me that this was it. Growing up nothing really interested me & it truly worried me. I didn’t wanna be a doctor, lawyer, or any other “big” girl career. So as soon as I felt the way I felt, I ran with it. Due to past work experiences, working for somebody else was not an option. I would tell my family the risk I was about to take and I respect the way they reacted. I respected all the “what ifs?” & concerns they had but I was motivated. I opened up Wax Me KJ on September 12th, 2021. I will always tell people that see my success now that it was not easy. It was not easy to work a 9-5 plus run home & take clients. To work double shifts and still make time to stay active on my socials. After so much thinking, I made the big step of quitting my job in April. I was ready to fully commit to my business. I was ready to finally grow.
I am most proud of being able to say that I did it all on my own. I took so many risks during my journey, just praying everything will fall in place. I have always put in my all when it comes to my business. I am extremely proud of myself for never letting anything get in my way.
I am a licensed esthetician & I specialize in full body waxing. I’m here to get you to stop picking up that razor every other week & build up that confidence you been hiding.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth. It’s crazy to me. Leave your mark on someone and they will tell everyone about you. I cannot stress how important it is to remain confident & to fully educate your clients. They will pay attention to all of that!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
“Failure is not an option”. Growing up I was that little girl who never left her comfort space. I would literally only do things if I knew I wasn’t going to “fail”. I never joined a spelling bee. I never joined an advanced class. I avoided learning new things simply because I didn’t want to fail. As a business owner, I have learned that you learn from failure, not from success. Failure is success if you learn from it.
