Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Culi. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karen, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
When I was 8, I saw Tony Meléndez perform live. He is a guitar player that plays with his feet. There was a standing ovation and my brother caught a drumstick. From there I was set on getting to a guitar one day and play in a band.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into the music industry as a solo artist after joining bands that fell apart over time. Back then, I played folk/indie pop rock, and a band I joined was a metal band. We couldn’t agree on originals to learn so we disbanded and one of the bandmate’s parents stepped in to manage. This led me down a rabbit hole of lies and manipulation, to use my songs and image for their own personal gain. I was young, impressionable, and naive, so it took me a bit to see the truth. After I left, I was set on recording and getting my singles out for the world to hear.
What sets me apart from others is what
happened 10 years ago, my first attempt at recording and planning to release music didnt work out. I didn’t stop writing, learning, and studying.
What I’m most proud of is the music, because what is currently out was recorded and written on the spot, during a short window before laying down the music and vocals. So it is a true test of my abilities. Though I struggled to record the guitars due to my previous injuries (spinal and arm). I am so proud of myself for getting through the pain. With the new music, it’s harder, heavier and explores the fusion of genres that make up my influences.
If you like pop, rock, emo, hard rock, nu metal, and blues, you would enjoy my music. If you’re new to hard rock, metal, or nu metal genres, my new music is like a stepping stone to the heavier music. So stay tuned, hoping to release some by next year.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the influence it has on others. Being thanked for creating is the best feeling.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes, my particular goal is 3 Grammys. That may be a farfetched to some but that is my goal in my music career. What drives my whole creative journey, is to become an EGOT. It may not happen immediately, but that is a life goal.
