Karen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?

When I first started working as a young person I got a job at a fast food restaurant, Kentucky Fried Chicken. As I was being trained to work the counter where people placed their orders, I learned a valuable lesson that I’ve remembered the rest of my life. My manager told me that no matter how long the line was, no matter how disgruntled people got while waiting, my only concern. was the person in front of me.

My job was to give my full attention to that one customer. I was to spend as much time as needed with him no matter how many people were waiting. Once I made sure that I got the order correct, and gave them the right amount of change, then I could move on to the next in line.

It is so easy to get flustered when you feel pressured or rushed. This one lesson has given me so much peace and helped me have patience too! It has served me well numerous times. In my travel business there have been times that I’ve had to decide to slow down and double check that everything is perfect for the client I’m helping before moving on to the next one.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

As the saying goes, “if you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I believe that! As a travel agent, I get to help people plan the best vacation they will ever take. I get to help them make those beautiful memories they will have for the rest their lives. And I get to know them during the process.

I love what I do! I’m not an order taker, I actually help you make those crucial decisions. When it comes to deciding where to go, how much to spend, and what to do or see when you get there, I’m here for you. No matter what you want I will work with you to make your dreams come true.

A big part of the reason to chose me as your guide is that I work at getting my experience first hand. Anyone can read travel brochures and watch YouTube videos to get answers, but how much better if you can hear from someone who has been there themselves! I love to travel and that is all research so I can help you achieve your travel goals. Of course, there’s no way I’ve done everything, but I work with a company who has 200 agents and I can glean all of their experience for you as well.

At Karen’s Pixie Vacations, I will work tirelessly for you to give you and your family everything the world has to offer. I’m an expert in all things Disney and am obsessed! I go to Disney World several times a year and love Disney cruises! I also love Universal Studios and can’t wait for their new park, Epic, to open next year.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

Well, building a reputation is all about how you do what you do. I feel like when your client is not only pleased but blown away by your service, they can’t help but tell people about it. My clients come home from their vacations with multiple pictures and so many memories!

How’d you meet your business partner?

When I retired I was interested in traveling. I hired a travel planner for the first time ever. And, she was so awful at it! I kept thinking wow, I would have done this so differently! When I asked her very specific questions her answers were canned and very general. I didn’t feel like she really helped me. After that trip I thought that maybe I could be a travel planner. I started looking at different companies to work with and found Pixie Vacations. They have been enormous help to me and have wonderful training. I highly recommend them!
