Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Karen Bailey. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Karen, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I attended a Photography School in Philadelphia, after retiring from my 46 year career in banking, with the same company. My plan after retirement has always been to make photography my second career. Being a young adult in the seventies, I was lucky enough to have a job upon graduation, so college was an option I was willing to forgo. Photography always remained a hobby. Discovering my photography niche was one of my most essential skills along with some technical aspects. Abstract Photography is my passion!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I realized my interest as a teenager, working with my Dad, using film and a Minolta 35mm camera, developing pictures in his darkroom. The hobby really kicked into gear with the birth of my first child, 47 years ago! My children never had to guess what they looked liked at any age, activity or milestone. I have pictures of it all!
After retiring on my birthday in 2017 with 46 years in Retail and Corporate Banking, I am finally able to fully devote time to my passion. Working in Banking has taught me the value of focused customer service, keeping your word, and always delivering above expectations. I have many awards and recognitions attesting to this skill. I’m most proud of the recognition I’ve received since embarking on this photograhpy journey, which are displayed on my website and social media sites.
My interest lie in all versions of Abstract Photography, landscapes, still life, people, objects, and experiments. I view everything though an abstract lens
I am a 2022 recipient of the TILT Institute for Contemporary Image, Photography Certification.
I am also a contributing member of Art 504, a local artists’ collective.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Recognition and appreciation of my work.
My first photography award happened about 38 years ago. I won Best in Photography as well as Best in Show for an Employee Art Show! I was hooked!! The awards I’ve earned the past 3 years keep me going.
Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
I would love to get involved in this industry, however I can’t shake the fear of work being misappropriated or stolen. Losing credit for my images.
