We were lucky to catch up with Karaleigh Garrison recently and have shared our conversation below.
Karaleigh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
My mission is about sharing your voice- because every voice is needed. I love sharing the story of how my severely autistic, nonverbal son was diagnosed with type one diabetes at age 7 and it gave him a voice. Through his story of unexpected miracles and finding a way to use his voice, I found a way to use mine when the odds were against me. My dreams seemed impossible as a mom of special needs children, but now I create custom podcast intro songs from the studio in my basement and teach moms to podcast from their phones. Every voice matters and needs to be heard, no matter how imperfect, limited, or messy we think it may be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I teach mobile podcasting through my Podcast Like A Mother: Podcast Creation Course. As a mom to three kids with special needs, I knew I had to find an alternative way to live my dreams. I’ve always been very ambitious and yearned to perform on stages- speaking, singing, sharing my heart and soul with the world. I knew deep down that there had to be a way for me to live to my full potential- to use all my gifts and talents, but still be there to care for my kids. When I met podcasting, it was love at first sight. I was able to write music for my own show and then build a business writing music for other people’s shows, all from home. As my show grew and I eventually started a second podcast, I realized that I was creating my episodes in a way that was unique- entirely from my phone. I would record from the school pick up line, write show notes while my kids were in gymnastics, and edit while I folded laundry. I started coaching new podcasters who were burning out because they were spending grueling hours staring at the computer when they didn’t have to. Now, with my course out, I can teach so many more people at once and offer 1:1 coaching around more individualized topics, like how to generate income from a specific topic (my most frequently asked question).
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I shared this a little earlier- I love to talk about my son’s diabetes journey and how it changed my life.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I spent decades studying opera and had to pivot. It actually does tie in with the diabetes story and the podcasting, I promise.
