Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kara Rainer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
There is always something to learn! I have loved (mostly) every step along this path of going after my dream, but there is a lot of hard work. Even though you have talent, there is a lot to learn in this industry. I remember when I first started dipping a toe into this world, I thought, sure, I’ll take a few classes get my feet wet and then I’ll be good to go right…? I quickly learned that there is always something to learn. Really, you can think of acting as training. Athletes and pianist train all the time. Acting is no different. I think constantly learning and growing is super important, because you are not always going to be busy. There is down time, sometimes a LOT of down time, so keep busy…and train your actor muscles!
Kara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I am Kara Rainer and I am an Actress. After doing some theatre work, I will took a deep dive into film and tv back in 2011. I have had some great opportunities so far on this ride and I am just getting started! If you knew me growing up in East Texas, you might know that I was SUPER SHY and wouldn’t even raise my hand in class because I didn’t want any attention put on me. But, acting has changed all that. I am super confident and not afrain to walk out onto a stage and do my thing! I am most proud that I come from such a shy background and it took everything I had to even take 1 step toward this business. It was so scary starting out for me, but I wanted it so bad that I kept going. I am proud how far I have come and even more so, I LOVE sharing with others how you can do anything at all as long as you keep hustling and ignore that fear that keeps creeping in. Don’t hold back from your dreams because you are afraid or because you don’t know what to do. Go Do It!

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think a big part of my story is the “Pivot”. I was happy being a stay at home mom of 3 amazing boys, but I did always have in the bottom of my heart, that constant dream to be a creative, an actress and singer. At that time, I had what we now refer to as Imposter Syndrome. A belief that you are inadequate or not skilled enough in an area of interestst. I called it not being good enough. I really think this is an important thing to recognize in yourself because this hold so many people back. If you don’t know what this is you can only recognize it as something true about yourself when it is only a fear. It is a fear of the unknown, of not being good enough but the truth is none of that is true. I want people to understand that the only thing that can hold you back is fear, nothing else. Whether you want to be an athlete, a doctor or an actor, nothing can stop you but fear. My biggest pivot came when my father was tragically killed by a drunk driver and I realized that you can be taken off this earth at any moment and what if I hadn’t even TRIED to reach for my dreams. What if I NEVER even try? That was my pivot.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
There are a lot of rewarding aspects that have come from being a creative, but I think the most surprising for me is the Confidence that I have gained. As I mentioned earlier about how shy I was as a child and a young adult…that is just not a problem for me anymore. I am not afraid to try anything or go anywhere. This feeling is so freeing! It allows you to be more accepting of your characters, allows you to keep hustling, unafraid. There is no feeling of “lesser than”. I am ready to step in a scene with Meryl Streep at any time. She’s on my bucket list! (beaming smile)
