We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kara Delacruz a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kara, appreciate you joining us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Memories fade over time as life happens and as we grow older, but photos have a powerful way of bringing memories alive again. They leave a legacy for future generations, freeze moments in time and prompt emotions. This is why being a photographer and capturing once in a lifetime moments and seasons of life for my couples means so much to me.
Kara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Florida-based couples and wedding photographer. My approach combines the freedom of documentary, infused with editorial portraiture, allowing my couples to be present in each moment. Wedding days are not a staged event, they are a beautiful celebration that should be documented as such. Rather than centering a wedding around photos, I ensure that I seamlessly intertwine with my couples interactions and emotions. Providing images that will tell their story through a unique, editorial way because their day can never be replicated.
Growing up I loved taking photos just for fun to document my day to day life. I would grab my friends and have them model for me. We would take an entire day to explore and shoot. As I got older I served on the creative photo team at my church while simultaneously taking a college photography class. My instructor shot weddings and I ultimately went on to second shoot for her. The experience kickstarted my love for weddings and now I own my own successful photography business!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Creating art from my couple’s stories. Providing them with galleries that will flood them with memories of a season of life, wedding day, milestone, etc. These images with be with them forever and become heirlooms passed down to generations.
The boundaries of what I can create are endless.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
SERVING current clients well. Being in the wedding industry, capturing beautiful photos is essential, but it’s not enough on its own for long-term success. Word of mouth travels – good or bad. Take the time to get to know your clients stories and build a relationship with them. I have found that I’m able to have better success capturing my couples when I know what’s important to them, who is special in their lives and their story as a couple. Being in a customer-focused field, I believe that serving my clients FIRST is the key to building lasting relationships and a thriving business.
