We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kara Cannella a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My whole life i’ve always been a very visually creative person. I was never really good at writing or speaking, and it frustrated me because I never thought I was ever good at anything. Dance has always brought me so much peace, and it was always my dream job to do as a career. When I went to college was when I really felt I could pursue art as my passion. Surrounding yourself in environments of people that understand art, and know how to challenge it in ways to help people was so eye opening. Going to an art based university changed my life. I look at the world in such a different lense and I’m forever thankful for that experience.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi my name is Kara Cannella I am a professional dancer / content creator! Born in raised in Dallas, Texas I have been dancing for about 17+ years of life, and furthered my education at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia to earn my BFA in Dance with a minor in Business Marketing. I was a junior in college when school got shut down for COVID. Like everyone I downloaded TikTok and little did I know I would end up 3 years in the making of becoming a content creator. I started by choreographing dances on the app, that lead me to move to Los Angles to peruse my dreams as a choreographer! I have choreographed for a recent Adam Sandler movie, music videos, and artist and it has quite literally become a dream come true.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I think the most important thing when building an audience is consistency!!! Like anything we watch on tv or online we’re constantly asking for more! The people that subscribe or follow are content always want more! I think it brings also trust with you and your followers and a routine. And don’t forget to try all different types of content. Don’t ever put yourself in a box the more variety the bigger the audience.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Society holds a lot of power in who/ what artist they want to see at the top. I think it’s important that when you see a creative start a trend, movement, or space that we give them the credit. A lot of creators/ creatives go unnoticed when other artist take ideas, or not give credit where it’s due. It’s our job as a community in the arts to notice the hard work and dedication artist sacrifice to present their work. It should never stole. and rewritten.
