We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kapil Ralli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kapil, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Learning is not about earning, but a way of flowering – Sadh Guru This quote has many meanings for me. I grew up in a normal middle class family with knowledge and school were given utmost importance. Education and degree is a norm and every parent wants their kids to go to college as a bare minimum. But the school system most countries do not have a logical or practical adoption. I mean where will you apply Pythagoras or Trigonometry. Absolutely useless knowledge unless you plan to become a mathematician (which 99% won’t).
Why don’t they teach how to pay taxes, how to fix you car if it breaks down in the middle of no-where, survival skills, CPR etc. etc. Same goes for photography schools. I did formal education on photography but little did I realize that kind of education will only teach you 10% – the rest 90% you learn through observation. Study visual art, understand nature’s wonders, observe light, observe human emotion, observe contrast, observe shadows, notice the finer movements of air, be still and absorb. I have been to Lake Louise in Banff Canada and i would go there early in the morning around 5 and then observe the texture of the lake as the sun comes up, watch how it changes color through the day and at night. I observed those subtle changes in the reflections, changes in it’s tonality, changes in the temperature of the lake. I have done that countless times and have seen a new change every time. This is just one example of how you observe and learn. You can observe a master photographer – His BTS, his reels, his style, his compositions.
The 2nd most important thing is implement what you learn. Practice practice practice. Apply your learning and review them again. Is your picture telling you a story, is it appealing to the not so obvious. Don’t be afraid to fail. What is considered as failure deepens your experience of life far more than what you consider as success. Of there is no risk of failure, there can be no success. Learn – fail – learn again.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers?

He thinks social platforms such as Facebook and Instagram should have leniency in their picture content policy. Beautiful nude art work or even the slightest of skin gets photographers deleted. This is 21st century.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
He wants to be published in the top magazines – Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Cosmo
