We were lucky to catch up with Kannabis Club recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kannabis , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Kannabis Club was created by Disco Don in a music business class for a final project. While earning a degree in Audio Engineering, he learned the skills that would be needed for success in the industry. But having the right people in the right places was key, and timing is everything. Anyone can start making music, but to bring together different elements under a unified name is a challenge. Everyone has a different schedule and agenda, so we have to be patient and accommodating in every situation. Being more of a collective is what makes us work better as a group, because we can operate with or without members, but always representing our brand.
Kannabis , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Kannabis Club is a highly experimental hip hop group from Kansas City that bends genres to create completely new and original sounds. We won Best Group in KC 2017 after our first summer tour, and were nominated for Best Local Band, Best Local Hip Hop, and Best Label in the following years. We are a collective of producers, DJs, MCs, and musicians that come together for the love of music and marijuana. We advocate for the full legalization of weed and aspire to be a leading name the industry. Maybe one day we’ll win an award for Best Stoners, or Best Weed Smoking Music. We’ve recently branched out from the midwest into the west coast to reach new fans and opportunities. Right now we’re seeking a new label, management, and placement opportunities that fit our unique style. We’re also open to performance bookings at festivals and cannabis industry events. You can find our current catalog of music published on all major streaming services.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Start small but always have a bigger mindset. We started marketing towards the local community that we already knew and connected with before trying to make it in a bigger city. We knew the right smokers and tokers already so why not try to blaze with them first? Never take your hometown for granted. These are some of our biggest fans and will get to say that they remember getting high with Kannabis Club when we were just a local act starting up. Don’t forget where you’re from or you will never have that supporting structure in place. While social media is a great way to market and reach people, it can also be very frustrating. We try and use every social media platform available, but there’s always something new and trending so keeping up can be difficult. Even if you think a platform like Facebook or Instagram is dead, we believe that having an official page is important for fans to find you and know you’re still active. Don’t get too upset when you’re not getting the numbers you think you deserve and try new tactics to reach people. Over time you will develop the fan base you deserve. And always deliver a quality product and promote it every chance you get!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The goal is for Kannabis Club to be a household name in a world of legalized marijuana. The decriminalization of the plant has come a long way in recent years, and our music is the soundtrack to the revolution!
