We recently connected with Kanique Mighty-Nugent and have shared our conversation below.
Kanique, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
The name of the company is Komposition and yes, we did switch out the C of the english spelling to a ‘K’ since both our names begin with the letter ‘K’. Originally when Kirk, my husband, and I created the business our service offerings were a bit different from what it is today. We were a Photography & Web Design company that offered various photography and website creation/redesign services. We came up with the name Komposition because we wanted to choose a word that could be mirrored between the two crafts. When you think of taking a picture you are considering all the different elements that are put together to compose the final image, similar to what is done with a website and when all those elements come together, they form a beautiful masterpiece.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My background/education is in technology, I obtained both my Bachelors and Masters in Information Systems and spent the first few years of my career working in the IT field. I soon met my husband, we married and two years later we had our first child and not wanting to go right back into the workforce, we decided that I would stay at home and take care of our son. Still wanting to have an outlet for my skills I decided to volunteer at my church as their assistant webmaster, and quickly and unexpectedly their primary webmaster. I realized that I really enjoyed this role and this became my training ground for honing my skills as a web designer. My intention at that time was not to make a business out of it, but after gaining recognition for my work, doors began to open and I officially started my business in January of 2010. More and more churches reached out for assistance which then branched out to small business owners, entrepreneurs, nonprofits and on and on. Two years later we received an assignment that moved us out of the country as missionaries to South Africa for four years. While there I was still able to keep my business going, mostly part-time while taking care of our two small children. At the close of our four years we both received offers to return to the United States to work at a HBCU in Huntsville, AL where we both were for a few years before going full-time with our business. Since then our business has grown and changed where we no longer offer Photography Services but Live Streaming/Video Production which my husband manages along with our long standing Web Design services which I manage and now include website maintenance, hosting, domains and consulting.
What makes us different is that we work solely with small business owners and solopreneurs at a price point that fits most budgets. We believe in excellence whether in our work or in how we interact with our clients and we live by the golden rule, treat others as you would want to be treated. We also empower our clients to take control of their products and services in that we ensure that they have full access to all of their products/tools whenever they want, however they want.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
There are two answers to this question. #1: Word of Mouth. I would say the majority of our growth in this business has been through word of mouth in that the clients we worked with had such a great experience they did not just keep it to themselves but told others and they told others. Which is one of the main reasons why we aim to have a positive client experience throughout the journey of each project. #2: BNI (Business Networking International). I was introduced to this network soon after we decided to go full-time into the business and it has been one of the best decisions we have ever made for our business. Each week for 1 ½ hours on a set day I go into a room with over 30 small business owners and we actively seek ways to pass referrals to each other. What makes this group unique is that in each chapter only 1 person from an occupation can be in the chapter, which eliminates any competition. There are about 20 other chapters in Huntsville and surrounding areas that I am free to visit which as a result has allowed me to meet more people thus widening my reach and gaining more recognition in my community.
Does your business have multiple or supplementary revenue streams (like a ATM machine at a barbershop, etc)?
As I mentioned briefly, we don’t just offer web design services we also offer website hosting and domains. So for potential clients, instead of going to multiple providers for all that they would need to build their website they can get everything directly through us which are additional streams of income. During the pandemic my husband started his youtube channel, KirkRNugent, which feeds into our business in multiple ways. For one, he creates tutorial videos explaining how to set up your livestream via platforms such as Streamyard, EVMux and Ecamm and as a result his subscriber count has grown and continues to grow. This brings in its own income along with funneling potential clients to the business as users are able to consult with him on how to stream their own shows and in some cases he is hired as a producer to produce their shows. He has also been able to sell courses, merch, webinars and so much more as a result.
