We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kanika a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kanika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I have been studying, learning, and practicing my craft as a performing artist and singer-songwriter since the age of 5. Now being an adult, I can definitely say this has been and continues to be a journey of self-discovery and growth. The world of entertainment is filled with many highs and lows and requires patience, determination, consistency, and Very Thick Skin! I have been very blessed to have worked with some really genuine people in this industry who have helped me to hone my skills and guide me on how to find my unique voice- pushing me to delve deeper into the art of storytelling through music and round out my other areas of artistic expression. I am learning that each note and word becomes a stepping stone towards creating music that resonates with others, reflecting my experiences, dreams and the world around me.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a multifaceted creative based in Baltimore, Maryland, with a background in singing and songwriting. My journey in the entertainment industry began at a young age, starting with modeling, dancing, acting on stage, and public speaking. Over the years, I have continued to pursue these passions. Currently, I am set to star as a principal lead in an off-Broadway musical premiering Spring 2024 and slated for release in 2025. Additionally, I have ventured into television production, having produced and hosted several radio podcasts and live talk shows aired on networks such as Amazon, Roku, and Apple TV.
As a recording artist and performer, I have built a following as the lead singer of the popular rock and ska band called The Upstarters, opening doors for me to perform at various venues across Maryland, DC, Virginia, and Delaware, including numerous festivals and as an opening act for renowned ska bands touring the US. My musical style is characterized by high energy, thought-provoking lyrics, and a diverse mix of tracks that compel you to dance. I enjoy writing music with uplifting messages that inspire hope and unity. I am currently working on a new album and can’t wait to release it this year. This project incorporates elements of rock, pop, soul, and Afrobeat. I am also excitedly gearing up to launch a new single called “Yesterday” in collaboration with Rocstar/Sony Orchard.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a performing artist, the most rewarding aspect of my craft is the ability to connect with audiences on a deep emotional level through my music and lyrics and evoke powerful feelings through my performances. Inspiring others through my art brings me immense joy and fulfillment. Also creating a meaningful impact is very important to me especially since many times the music gets diluted by oversexualization in marketing, overshadowing its true essence and message. Not everyone gets the chance- or even wants to get in front of large audiences and bare their soul, so the opportunity to express myself creatively and share my passion with the world is truly gratifying.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Yes, my creative journey is fueled by a mission to create music with meaningful lyrics that resonates with listeners on a deep level, while also creating melodies that inspire movement and joy. As one half of a songwriting duo (shout out to my songwriting partner John “JG” Gordon), we are using music to uplift, provoke, and push boundaries. We challenge ourselves on writing a good song with a compelling storyline and memorable hook that will have people singing along. I aim to revive a form of musical diversity that enables artists to blend profound messages with danceable beats, making their music accepted on larger mainstream stages, not just confined to the indie or underground scene.
