We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kanessa Murphy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kanessa, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to start by getting your thoughts on what you are seeing as some the biggest trends emerging in your industry.
This is going to sound really cliche, but I think it’s all social media. For me my biggest platform to influence and create on is TikTok. It has inspired me to make a really big impact on TikTok .

Kanessa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From the day I was born, I’ve been interested in cameras, fashion, and beauty. I owned every shade of roll-on lipgloss available at the beauty retailer even when I was a young girl. Every week or two, I always had a new set of press-on nails and my oldest sis Eve would do my hair in many different styles. At age 5, I discovered how to braid and style my hair, and I constantly pleaded with my mother to use cosmetics on me. I have no idea why I am so enamored of beauty, to be honest with you. I was born with this affection. I always feel in charge and self-assured when it has to do with beauty. When I got into my teenaged years and the first iPod with cameras came out I believed that I was a star from that moment on. It was a match made in content creating heaven.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
To not respond to negativity and sometimes, it’s better to not look at comments. Of course there are trolls on the internet. The internet is a free place that people can talk on. People are going to talk regardless if you do bad or good.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Just do it. When I started, I had an iPhone 11 and a lot of makeup that I would buy after sitting and watch other influencers review at 4am. I didn’t have many clients to have their makeup done at the time so I would get on love and do my makeup at home during the pandemic as if we weren’t on shut-down. I didn’t have every essential for content creating back then. Things like have a MacBook , proper lighting or a great camera. But Youtube and TikTok is what I wanted to do and I wasn’t going to let anything or anyone get in my way of doing just that. I recorded and edited my youtube videos on my TikToks and I got to a point where I saved up enough money to buy MacBook , Canon camera and lighting so that the content I put out would be quality content.
