We were lucky to catch up with Kandyce Williams recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kandyce , thanks for joining us today. How do you feel about asking friends and family to support your business? What’s appropriate, what’s not? Where do you draw the line?
I personally don’t ask for support from family and friends. They see your social media. They see your work. If they want to support, they will. If not, it’s ok! There are billions of people in the world. Someone, somewhere, will support your business. Focus on those people!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been an artist all of my life. I started taking it more seriously while working from home. There are only so many Netflix movies I could watch! After sharing my work on social media and receiving positive reception, I built a website and began attending in-person art events.
The more events I attended, the more I fell in love with my artistry. Meeting people who connected with my art made me feel more understood. While clients fill their homes and businesses with my art, they are unknowingly filling my soul.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
I started small, with my own money. After each event, I reinvest in my business. It doesn’t have to be perfect to start. Changes and upgrades can be made along the way. And that’s what I did and am continuing to do!
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
Initially I used a printing service for all of my art prints. It was trial and error until I found the best quality at the best price. Once I built up enough capital, I purchased a printer and began printing my own prints. I spent hundreds of dollars searching for the best paper. Eventually a fellow artist provided me with the perfect paper source. Maintaining good relationships with your peers is important!
