Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kandyce Jackson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kandyce, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
Retiring from my career of 17 years earlier this year has been my biggest risk thus far. As scary as it was, I took the leap and have no regrets. I am still getting acclimated to full time entrepreneurship, from creating and sticking to a schedule to balancing finances. Having patience and grace with myself has been key.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Kandyce, a Los Angeles born and raised, Dallas living, self taught artist and illustrator. Growing up in a family of creatives, I developed a deep love for The Arts. From a swimsuit line, to a fashion boutique, to handmade jewelry and crochet pieces, the ever-evolving hunger for artistic expression is to my core.
KandyAppleTree, an art and illustration brand, was birthed from that passion to create. My moniker, KandyAppleTree, embodies the spirit of my artwork: Kandy, is of course, short for Kandyce, while apple trees – the “trees of love” in Celtic astrology and other ancient mythology – symbolize love, creativity, and magic. My soul-feeding illustrations, inspired by everything from nature’s beauty to pop culture, reflect the beauty and magic in our daily lives.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As mentioned before, I retired from my career of 17 years. I have had to unlearn relying on others for structure. Creating my own structure is still a work in progress, but I am enjoying the journey.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Art is more than a sell, it’s a connection. Pop-up markets have greatly increased my sales and returning customers as I am able to connect with each person individually.
