We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kandice Cherelle a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kandice thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve been singing as long as I can remember- since I was about four or five -years-old. I always knew singing and music was my passion, because I would it with no hesitation-and for free. I knew I wanted to pursue music professionally when I was about seven or eight-years-old. I had the opportunity to sing at an event that was honoring teachers. My second grade teacher, my mom, brother and grandparents were there. I sang “Because You Loved Me,” by Celine Dion, but we changed it to “Because You Taught Me.” Evander Holyfield was also in attendance and I had the opportunity to sing in front of him and meet him. I knew right then as a small child in a room full of hundreds adults that I was doing exactly what I needed to do. There was no fear or doubt. I knew I was right where I needed to be.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am a singer, songwriter, and pianist I am using my real life experiences of hurt, disappointment and shame to inspire: the true definition of turning lemons into lemonade. My entire mission is to entertain, inspire and help others heal through music. I make RNB music with a 90’s vibe. I love the 90’s/early 2000’s era of RnB music. My music helps you escape the world and relax. I’m also very transparent and relatable, so I hope my music helps others know they’re not alone.
As a domestic violence survivor, I am also an advocate.I truly want to build a relationship with my supporters.
Kandice re-released her single, “Broken” in October 2022 in honor domestic violence victims and survivors everywhere.
I am finishing her EP, “The Makeover,” which is a mixture of R&B, Hip Hop and Urban AC.
Kandice is also a 4 time award-winning journalist.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My goal is help others heal through music. Music is a universal connector for all mankind. Music helped me get through some trying and difficult moments in my life. I represent the working woman, the mom working a job, having a side hustle and taking care of her kids. I represent the woman chasing her dream, despite the odds or it not being “the right” time. I want to help others health through music and help them be the best person they can be.
My single, “Broken” is all about this- rising up and putting yourself back together through the pain, hurt and disappointment.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that you had to look a certain way or act a certain way in the music industry. Or that you’re not relevant if you’re not on the radio or television. There are so many other incredible artists and creatives that are not on the radio or they’re not household names, but they’re doing what they love and have strong support. This helped me to understand how important it is to build relationships.
