Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kandi Lake. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kandi, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve ever worked on has to be this unreleased song I have with my band The Kavities. The song is called “Of Course I Still Love You” and it’s simply just my take on confronting mortality; sadly there is no exciting story I can tell or big cinematic revelation I can describe. It honestly means so much to me just because it’s something I think and feel constantly in almost a preordained way and I’ve finally been able to put it into words and make it sound entertaining; hopefully when it’s released it will be understood and felt aswell.

Kandi, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kandi Lake I am a Singer/Songwriter from Nashville Tennessee and I am the lead singer of the Band “The Kavities”. Music for me came at a time when I couldn’t have needed it less; i didn’t grow up with musicians or know anyone who played instruments but I was attached to my older sister like glue and I ended up listening to everything she would listen to and that happened to be a lot of Rap, Metal, and Punk bands. Over the years I gravitated to listening to more and more rap and on my first day of starting high school and moving to an entirely new city, I was sitting on the bus and heard kids in the back freestyling and I tried to join in because I thought they sucked and I could rap better than them and though I wasn’t good by any means I actually was better than them and they told me I was dope asf so I was hooked from then on. The feeling of accomplishment and purpose gave me something I haven’t been able to replace with anything else yet.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I like when people like me, not in a people pleaser or attention seeking way but genuinely it’s the one thing in life I’m good at and when I am good at this thing it’s the easiest way for me to walk into a room full of strangers and leave a lasting positive impression on them.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I think the two paths are parallel, I’ve sat with this question for awhile about what a non creative wouldn’t understand but I honestly think the answer is nothing, there is no story I can tell or experience I can share that is not relatable in some way and I think that because I believe in a very important regard the duty of a creative and any business is too be relatable, to be useful, and provide a sense of value/understanding. However self serving they may seem I think the ultimate objective of creatives and non creatives are to be public servants; the transcribers, preservers, and challengers of culture and science and all of the other aspects of human life.
