We recently connected with Kanchana and have shared our conversation below.
Kanchana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I’m very thankful to my parents for letting me pursue my happiness and not being strict with anything. I am very lucky that I have all the freedom in the world to do whatever I love: I have to admit most south Asian parents are very strict with their child’s education and freedom :)
I have studied and worked in many industries: I graduated from high school in business, then studied to be a Surveyor and worked as an intern for a few months before I decided to move to London. I had various experiences and education in IT, programming, and web designing even before I was 15, and then moved on to surveying, business, and marketing. That’s probably why I’m a little bit good at everything because I get interested in new things very often. I believe little things like this helped me become who I am today.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Kanchana, I’m a fashion blogger and a social media manager based in Atlanta, Georgia. I create dark and minimal aesthetic fashion content on social media which is very trendy these days and you can check out my Instagram @kanchanalle. I have worked with Farfetch, Revolve, Cashapp, GSHOCK, Guess, FOX TV, ThredUp, Polene, David’s bridal etc…
I also founded a social media marketing agency called @zynkmedia in February 2023. My goal is to share the knowledge and experience I’ve learned from managing and growing other brands’ social media with my clients.
The most important lesson I have learned as a content creator is to focus on quality over quantity. I stopped caring about the number of likes I have but I do care about the quality of my content. Of course, numbers are important factor for growth but if your content quality is good you don’t have to worry about the numbers.
How did you build your audience on social media?
It all started a couple of years ago, but I started to be serious about influencing in 2021. My best advice for anyone wanting to grow their social media is to be humble and accept your lack of skills and try to improve them. I had many creators reach out to me for advice and when I looked at their content it was not up to par. Some people struggle with better content but are not expected to reach for their efforts at that point I suggest creating a new account and that’s what I did in 2021. My old account had many males and they weren’t from the US which doesn’t help me grow as a creator. Most brands are looking for an 80% female audience being the majority of people are from where you are based in.
If you are struggling with the same issues I highly suggest creating a new account and starting over. If your content is good then all you have to do is start posting them: if it’s not great, try to get inspiration from other creators. Try to find out why their content performs well and what are they doing that you aren’t doing already. What worked for me was being consistent, evolving, learning new skills along the way, asking for help, getting feedback from friends, figuring out how to create content by myself, improving video quality, finding trends early on, hoping for new trending sounds, finding out what’s trending within my niche, etc… the list goes on.
If you want to grow your social media consistently learn to be humble and ask yourself if your content is really good. If not learn from your mistakes which will help you create better content. There are so many resources on the internet if you are struggling. All the creators are going through this process, we all are still learning and evolving to every social media updates and trends as we speak.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes. What I’ve struggled with the most is creating content at first. I had no idea how to create fashion videos at first and my video was okay. I can’t say they were so bad, it was alright in my opinion but that step-by-step process really helped me figure out my angles, and how to improve video quality, lighting, and locations.
I want to continue that process and improve my content creation. Nowadays I see many people share content creation tips and editing tips so there is no excuse for those who are looking for some help.
