We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kammy Burnett a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kammy, thanks for joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I truly believe people are born with certain gifts. Some people are funny and some are not. I truly believe that people are born with their comedic personality. I also believe people can learn to be funny. That’s what my comedy instructor said anyway. I knew I was funny, but I wasn’t sure exactly what made me funny. When I was a kid, people would laugh at things I said, and I though they were making fun of me. As I got older, I got over those thoughts.
Since I was young, I always knew I wanted to be an actor. I got married and raised children, and my acting career never took off. Not at first, anyway. My focus was raising them and put food on the table. I think if I had known that comedy was my gift, I would have sought it out sooner, and taken comedy writing and standup comedy workshops. Social media wasn’t “a thing” at that time, and I didn’t begin making comedy videos until later.
I’ve been an empty-nester for a few years now, and since then, I’ve developed a following on Youtube, Tiktok and Instagram making comedy skit videos, viral videos and impersonating celebrity folks. Mostly political figures. I’ve impersonated Sarah Palin, Jen Psaki, Caitlyn Jenner, Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris. I was recently hired, for two days, as a Nancy Pelosi impersonator for Autopilot, an investment app for people wanting to invest like the politicians do. I was followed by photographers, and bodyguards, as I was dressed in a pink suit as former Speaker of the House. We filmed around the city and inside casinos. I walked around and gambled with YouTuber Mike Majlak and sat in the front row at the UFC fight at the new Sphere in Las Vegas. It was a fantastic experience and I look forward to more.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I got into comedy after years as an actor. Comedy is something I always enjoyed. What sets me apart from others is my ability to impersonate people. I’m proud to say I don’t feel embarrassed to act like a fool on social media. My end goal is to make a living doing what I’m good at and what I love. Whether it be writing and collaborating with other comedians or performing standup on stage. Everyone needs to laugh and I can provide that. My goal is to get a huge agent who can get me in front of the right people. I believe my day is coming.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I first began my social media presence on Youtube. I made a couple short videos and uploaded them. I collaborated with a fellow actor, who is now a standup comedian. We did a video about bugging your man during a game. It was a long of fun and I got alot of views. After 11 years, I’m still getting views and likes. I started doing skits and viral videos for Instagram and finally Tiktok. I’m still making videos and I will be focusing on YouTube and Tiktok since the pay the best.
It’s not easy and there’s still a lot more to learn. It’s crazy what people enjoy watching. Believe it or not, my most-watched and liked videos are my farting and trending dancing videos. I even had a couple guys DM me asking if I’d make them burping and farting videos.
My advice to anyone starting out their social media presence is to keep writing and posting. Look for trending videos and sounds. Don’t forget the hash tags. Keep going and never give up. If something doesn’t work, find out what does.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative, is creating. Creating is something a creator has to do. They’re born with it. They live for it. There’s no other alternative. There’s nothing like being paid for what you love. Now, I just have to get there.
