We recently connected with KaMiyah McNair and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, KaMiyah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
How did I scale up? I started out only doing preorders for a small amount of people. Over the past year my clientele has tripled. I started going out with food truckers for more exposure, I started taking larger bookings and I also started promoting myself every opportunity I had whether it was air dropping my menu/business cards in stores or leaving business cards in random areas. Stepping out and just doing it versus asking people who would support me.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I started my business in 2020 during a battle with depression. Baking was my coping mechanism and still is. It first started as a simple Mothers Day present to my mom and stepmom and blew up from there. I adore my customers and built a strong relationship with them! I am a self taught baker/treat maker who doesn’t follow recipes.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been networking with food trucks! I go out and set up with food trucks that way people can get there food followed by a delicious sweet treat without having to travel out of the way. I also have loyalty cards where my customers can get discounts or free items when they refer someone to my business and whoever they refer comes and purchases something.

How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
Funding a small business out of your own pockets can be extremely difficult and can extend the initial process of opening the business itself. Starting out I made sure when I went out I had a tip jar. I would collect the tips and let it add up so that I could buy business cards and certain supplies needed. At this time I’m trying to expand my business and purchase a dessert truck. I’m praying with the help of my customers I’ll be able to do this before the end of the year! My goal is to travel throughout NC with my desserts.
