We recently connected with Kamini Desai and have shared our conversation below.
Kamini , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I grew up as the daughter of a Yoga Master and gained alot of knowledge growing up in a spiritual community. In my early twenties, I decided this “yoga stuff” wasn’t as important as changing the world and I started my studies towards becoming a diplomat. I found myself in Geneva Switzerland alone and without the support of the community I grew up in. I soon found out that the peace process is heavily political and became disillusioned. I found myself becoming depressed and feeling lost inside. That’s when I picked up the techniques my father had taught me in my youth. As I began practicing, word got around my apartment building. People started knocking on my door, asking me to help them with their insomnia, test anxiety, and more. That’s when I realized that true peace begins with inner peace. We can’t share with the world what we do not first have ourselves. I shifted my course of study to psychology in order to bring western language to eastern philosophies. To this day, I feel I am a diplomat – but a diplomat of inner peace.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I help people find a core of inner stability that will help them navigate the rapidly changing landscape of life. Most of us have the tendency to seek happiness from the outside in. We try to secure externals—such as a relationship, a promotion, or a new car—to create an internal sense of happiness. But this is an uncertain strategy. Whatever comes, comes to go. If we are dependent on these things for our sense of identity, we will easily lose our balance when change inevitably comes. People, places and situations change, and when we cannot navigate these changes, we becomes stressed, anxious, develop sleep problems and even physical symptoms.
We cannot think our way to inner stability. It is something that can only be accessed through building a brain and nervous system that is resilient, and through experiencing the silent presence that resides behind the activity of the anxious mind.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
You have to know who you are. Other people are doing amazing things in the world. It is very easy to compare and become discouraged. Know that comparison is always relative. If you are feeling good about yourself, you’ll compare yourself to people who are not as developed in their field. If you are feeling bad about yourself, you’ll compare yourself to people who are doing better than you. The common denominator is all about how you feel about yourself. I’ve found that creating a mindset and practice that is continually fortifying and nurturing who we are is critical to success.
If you see yourself going down this path, remind yourself that its really none of your business what others are doing. Stay in your own lane and focus on making the unique contribution you are here to give. Comparison makes you lose energy that could otherwise be propelling you forward.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The most important thing is to expect to put in the time and the effort to get the results. It doesn’t always come quickly. It is consistency over time which eventually brings people to you. Be who you are. Have integrity. Do your best to be authentically who you are and fulfill, to the best of your ability, the promises you make to others. Over time, this creates a certain magnetism people will sense about you. That will make you stand out from the crowd.
