We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kamilah Foster. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kamilah below.
Kamilah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had started sooner?
I started my podcast in 2020 during the pandemic. I found a way virtually to check in on people who were in my circle since we limited on being outside. It started with conversations through Facebook and then I graduated to podcasting and I have been doing that ever since. My mantra is I believe in 6 degrees of separation you are one person away, one advice away, and one help away from where you need to be in your destiny. I share my platform for people to share their stories to give people hope, to promote themselves rather it’s movies, music, books, or survival stories. I find that through conversations you find out that we are more alike then we are different, and you will only find that out by having conversations. We can change the narrative of our society if we get back to the village concept. We cared for one another through good and the bad times.
Kamilah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am an accomplished author, singer, actress, songwriter, and podcaster. I have a huge heart to help people become who they are supposed to be. I am a natural born leader and connector. I try to make every person feel like a celebrity no matter of their status in life. I want people to feel loved and appreciated. I am living proof that you can truly overcome if you have the right people in your life. Love is the key to turning any situation around. I was a divorcee. I overcame being suicidal. I overcame people thinking the worse of me to becoming Sunshine. I know that people need love more than anything. I try to provide that through the arts. I can pull up a virtual rolodex of close friends in every industry and connect people to resources to get advice, jobs, help to become who and where they need to be in their destiny.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
The main goal is to keep going with the vision even if no one supports you or get your vision. There are plenty of times when I wanted to quit or give up when no one was supportive so I thought, but people are watching you even when they never say anything. You are inspiring people everyday when you show up with a smile and great attitude. You don’t know how much people love what you do to help society be better. Just when I thought it was over I would get encouraging words from people I had no clue was listening or watching me. Everyone loves an underdog story or a story of triumph. Be intentional in spreading love and positivity that’s the mission.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
In short, the greatest reward of being an artist or creative is having the freedom to be me. I don’t want to be like anyone else. I want to continue to be unique. I love hearing that the guest had a great time having a conversation with me. The ultimate reward is I check in on their processes long after they been on the show. They become part of my village and family.
