Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kamiah Vickers. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Kamiah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Winter of 2021, I had an interesting play idea that I thought loosely of. I knew I wanted to write, and that I was passionate about creating a play that features black actors, but I didn’t have the idea fully developed. Small spurts of the play started forming, and after 6 months of strict writing, a play formed. I didn’t know this show would go anywhere, but after it was chosen as an NYU student works production, I knew that it would be one of the most important projects in my career. This project is meaningful to me because it is many firsts. My first time writing a new play, my first time directing, etc. I learned so many things and overall grew as an artist.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My name is Kamiah Vickers, and I grew up in a small town outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. Performing made me feel alive in numerous ways, and I started venturing into writing and directing from an early age. In 2019 i got accepted into New York University for their drama program, and the journey has since skyrocketed. Being a part of such a creative school has furthered my training and helped discipline my craft. While in school, I found a need for plays that feature black artists. I knew the play curriculum we got was stemmed from old white playwrights, and there was a need to change. That is where my passion of playwriting really sparked. From there, I have been writing thought provoking work that highlights themes dealing with family, love, relationships, etc. And I hope to put on my work and feature underrepresented artists.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
COMPARISON. But it is one that is a constant journey. Being around so many creative peers, you will find it easy to compare your journey, or even question your worth. I’ve had to re program how my mind thinks, and remember that we are all on the journey of finding and discovering ourselves. No one has it fully figured out, and in reality, everyone has something they’re dealing with. When you focus on yourself and your craft, you remain focused on your purpose. It’s not easy to get rid of these thinking patterns, but when you realize and are confident in your individual gifts, the possibilities are endless.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
When my play was chosen as an NYU production, I knew that I wanted it to be a fun experience. Social media can be used in so many ways, but i wanted to use it as a fun way to network and show behind the scene footage. I managed the social media account, because that is something I also love doing. Social media is all about finding what you are passionate about creating, and just fully going for it. If you know your niche and stay consistent, you will see the results. But, make sure you’re having fun while doing it.
