We recently connected with Kamia McWilliams and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kamia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you as a business owner?
I’ve worked many corporate jobs but working as a Bank Teller for almost two years I learned so much that helped me as a business owner. There was an incident that occurred where my supervisor told me that I could check my own balance on my account. I ended up going into training with someone who was above her and she had seen that I had been checking my account and she was livid! Come to find out, that was against the policy, and I was close to losing my job behind that. So, I went to my supervisor confronted her, she ended up denying ever telling me that until another employee confirmed that she had. When I went back to talk to my trainer (the woman above the supervisor) she gave me a helpful piece of advice and that was: Always cover yourself by doing your due diligence. Never, take anyone’s word for anything without doing your own research regardless of their title and if it’s not in writing it didn’t happen. I took that advice and learned my lesson, now I find myself using it in my own business. I always send emails after having conversations with my clients and I always do my own due diligence.
Kamia, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In a transition of my life, what I call one of the darkest I found not only myself again but most of all my purpose. And that was helping other women who were mothers navigate through the same thing. I found my purpose as not only a disciple for Christ Jesus, ministering women but also as a maternity photographer. I am a stay-at-home mom who has many avenues that I travel down but my main one is being a disciple of Christ Jesus, helping women in their faith walk through sit downs and also the podcast that I currently host @thebeingofher. Throughout the week I’m managing my career as a Realtor in Georgia, where I work with families to buy or sell their home. Then, on the weekend I’m a fulltime maternity photographer, I love working with mothers; especially considering the fact that I am one myself, so I’m very passionate about working with women and pregnant women. And last, but not least, I’m a writer/author! I’m most proud of the women I’ve encouraged and have been able to learn from and meet over my journey as a businesswoman. I’ve not only learned so much, but they’ve inspired me in ways that I can’t even began to name because it’s so much.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media by 1. being myself, authentic. and 2. supporting others but following and keeping up with those that I truly had a desire to do so. We can get so eager in having a large following that we miss the true purpose of social media. It’s truly about staying connected with those who you want to stay connected to. You can have 10k followers and only 10% actually engage with you because you missed the true purpose. So, my advice is to always stay connected with those who you truly have a desire to stay connected with. Always engage with those who engage with you!
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What has helped me build my reputation is again, being myself. I say this in the humblest way possible, there is nobody like me and there is nobody like you. The greatest impact that you’ll have on the market that you’re in is being consistent & authentic with your identity. It doesn’t matter who I talk to, what I post, when you see me or how you see me, you’re going to always get the same person because I am who I am, within my market or outside of it, and I don’t change that for anyone.
