We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kamia Mccoy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kamia below.
Kamia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally was at the age of 6. I started off playing the keyboard, cutting up my clothes for cool fashion and I danced ballet and hiphop. I have always loved all 3, fashion, music and dance. At the age of 10 I wanted to be a dance choreographer. I would make up dances with my friends, siblings and cousins at school and at family gatherings. When I turned 16 I started to write my own music, but I would always keep it to myself. It was very personal for me and I was too shy to share with others. I was truly a very artistic kid growing up. I would always go back and forth on being a dancer, music artist and fashion designer. Now that I am older I can incorporate all of them together. I make my own beats for my music and write my songs, I may not design clothing but I love to put different pieces together to come up with an outfit and I can choreograph my own dances when I do performances.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who do not know me I go by the name MiSA and I am an Artist. I am from Cincinnati, Ohio now living in Los Angeles, California. I got into music at a young age listening to the music that my family would play. I loved the beats and different sounds in music. My first instrument I was taught to play was the Keyboard in Elementary School at the age of 6. It was a Creative Performing Arts School. A little before that my dad had me on his beat machines and I would copy the sounds that he would make. 4th to 6th grade I was in the band at another school and I played the flute. When I got the High School I had a music class and we learned to play the violin. I was so excited because the violin is one of my favorite instruments. I wasn’t in the band in High School, but I did dance on the Majorette Dance Team that would perform with the band. I was able to come up with different styles of clothes and made some of the dances as well. I love that so much. I was a natural at dancing, but my parents did put me in ballet in my Elementary Performing Arts School. I am very intelligent, always had good grades in school, but my favorite classes were Art, Dance and Music class. I did attend college and I danced on a team there as well. The type of creative work I provide is my music. I write, sing, rap and produce my own music. I don’t think that I solve my listeners problems, but I do believe that I guide them through their problems by letting them know that they are not alone I have been through tough times too and tough times do not last long. I think I give people motivation to keep going and to believe in yourself. What sets me apart from others is that I can be myself and not care if someone is judging me. I love who I am inside and out. I am most proud of me for having the courage to go after my dreams and goals that I set for myself. I wasn’t’ to confident at first, but now I am. The main things I want my supporters to know that I am the creative mind, hands and voice behind my work, but I do go to the studio to have someone else record me and also mix and master my songs for the finishing touch. Shoutout to my Engineer Nick. I truly love what I do.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
What I think society can do to best support artist especially upcoming artist is to allow them to be who they are without tearing them down. If you do not like something the artist does, you do not have to follow them on social media or leave a negative comment. The ones who do enjoy the art that the artist create let them know about it. We create for ourselves, but also for you, the ones who listen. It would be nice to hear some feedback if you enjoyed or can relate too. I love when I get good feedback it makes me want to keep going because I know others like what I do. Push people to keep thriving in their creative field. As an Artist, supporters should not be the only reason you keep going it should be yourself FIRST, but it does feel good when you have people rooting for you.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My journey has been tough. I have doubted the process and my progress a few times. I am happy where I am now, but I thought I would be a little further than where I am. I do believe everything happens when it should. In Divine timing. I know that God has me covered and when I know that it helps me get out of the overthinking that it may not work. I have seen many things work out in my favor so why not this one. I believe I am chosen for this since a kid. I also like looking into my favorite Artist’s stories and how they grew up and where they are in life now. For example I love Nicki Minaj she is my favorite Rapper, Singer, and Songwriter. I have been listing to her since I was 10 and I am 26 now. So that is 16 years of me listening to her. Listening to her at this age I feel like I connect with her through her music more because of our experiences and similarities. It’s like I’m listening to it with a new set of ears than I was when I was 10 years old. She had a rough life growing up and she made it out and so did I. Even when it gets hard I push through no matter what I am still here.
