We recently connected with Kametria Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Kametria, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Early in your career, how did you think through the decision of whether to start your own firm or join an established firm?
When I first started out, I joined a firm. Originally I didn’t know what I wanted to do for a career. As I worked as an Office Service Specialist for a local Public Health Department, I began to fall in love with Data Analysis and Software Systems. Upon completion of my Bachelors I was promoted to an Associate Business Analyst. In this position I worked on an System Migration Implementation project. We had the worst Business Consultant, she was rude and disregarding of our needs. It was then when I discovered that I wanted to be a Business Consultant! I didn’t want another company or person to feel how I felt during the process. I began to research the requirements for being a Business Consultant and the top 5 companies. Being new in the field I knew i would need some leverage over others so, I enrolled back in school for my MBA. I took a job at another company that offered a Consulting Academy so I could get experience in the field. Then BOOM Deloitte called! It was the best decision for me. It allows me to work with clients and provide them great service. I do aspire one day to have my own consulting firm. Working for a Firm will give me the experience I need along with a resume and list of clients to put behind me. Starting your own firm is a great idea, however, you have to prove yourself to others and show why you deserve a chance over a bigger firm.
Kametria, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am the true definition of Delayed is not Denied! It took me 16 years to complete my bachelors, then an additional 2 for my MBA.
By profession, I am a Business Consultant. I had terrible experience with a Business Consultant, and at that moment I knew I wanted to be a Business Consultant so no one would ever experience the disrespect I encountered on that project. I specialize in Software Testing and System Integration.
During COVID I started a Virtual Assistant “K’ Dianne” business. I organize files, emails, and manage calendars/schedules. I absolutely enjoy every aspect of this job!
Lastly, I am a Gospel Recording Artist! Releasing a single was one of my proudest moments! I prefer Gospel music, but I am classically trained, and I sing R&B. I’ve had the privilege to Tour internationally with the Glory Gospel Singers and I am a member of Chicago Mass Choir. If you’re looking for a soloist or a workshop leader, book me!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’ve restarted my Bachelor’s 5 times! Between sickness, starting a family, moving to a different state, taking care of disabled family members, death, and running out of financial aid; it took me 16 years to complete my Bachelor’s. This is one of my PROUDEST moments. This is one thing I wanted to complete no matter how long it took.
It was very difficult trying to raise a family, be a supportive wife, and finish school.
To all the parents that are in a similar situation, Keep going! You got this!
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Changing careers or pivoting is OK! The one time I had to pivot was when we moved from Nashville, TN to St. Louis, MO. I had to resign from a job that I had been on for several years and look for work in a new city. There was no jobs similar to the one i worked at in Nashville, and those that were similar I did not meet the education requirement. When I got to St. Louis I had no idea what I wanted to do so I took a few years off to go back to school and try to find my passion.
