We recently connected with Kameryn Robinson and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kameryn thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My name is Kameryn Robinson. I am a young creative from the DMV area. Working in the entertainment industry, I have come to learn there are many levels to creating art. I have worked on large sets with some well-known names but I have also worked on very small sets filled with passion and dreams. In the area I am in, I find that there are many people who want to get into the art of filmmaking, be it as the filmmaker or an actor, but we appear to be very disconnected from one another.
Those who are already doing their own thing independently are consistent with one another but those who are new don’t know how to find these local fellow creatives. This leads people to leaving and going to other major cities, such as Los Angeles or Atlanta, in hopes of being given a chance to do what they know they love. I have found the downside of that to be that a person becomes one of many in those situations and it can be very hard to maintain the passion you have for filmmaking when financial burden starts to creep on you in a land you’re new to.
That being said, I saw an opportunity! With the knowledge I have garnered on various sets, as well as working on both the east and west coast, I decided to take on the role of being the connector that brings creatives together in the DMV area.
In the future, I hope to grow enough where I can also have an impact on young creatives who may still be in colleges local to the area. I want to be able to provide exposure to the film industry where they can see how actual pre-production happens, how a set runs, and how the flow of post-production operates from the editing room to the marketing plan. ReAction is just project number one of many.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been working in the film industry, officially, for about three and a half years now. I received my start from my old professor from Morgan State University offering me the opportunity to accompany him on a documentary-style shoot for The 400 Years of African American History Commission. From there, I met producer, Dean Lynes, who has exposed me greatly to many different documentary/interview-type projects all over the United States. On the other hand, I have family in California who are in the entertainment industry and have had me around while they work. Through those opportunities, I was able to meet people and establish my own connections on the west coast for work. Since then, I have worked on multiple professional music videos as well as movie and television productions. The main thing I realized while doing all of this, however, was that I had lost the essence of creating my own projects. I had to make a change.
Locally, in my area, I am pushing to be different to the already existing filmmakers. I want to really push for artist independence and creativity. I want to raise the standard for the independent filmmaker and not have finances be a major reason as to why the products of an independent can’t have the feel of a major production company. I want to inspire individualism and ideas where a creative feels free to make the idea they thought of without having to bend and twist their stories to please a higher entity, hoping to get a chance at distribution. I want to take advantage of the tools we have, such as social media, to become our own champions, much like what is currently happening for independent artists in the music industry.
The first step I took in following this initiative was teaming up with other local filmmakers, K. DyRec Butler of RecFocus and Anthony Commodore of Commodore Independent Filmworks. In August of 2023, I wrote four scripts as episodes to a web series titled, ReAction. Using my experience, I went through the process of breaking the script down, as an assistant director would, and then casting from November to December. By the time January rolled around, we had started filming. Thanks to RecFocus, we were able to film on RED cameras, which are one of the top brands in the industry currently. Although our team was small (a crew of 5), we were able to get the job done! We have created a beautiful piece that not only pushes the quality standard of the area but it also appeals to an audience that hasn’t been the main focus in the past few years.
ReAction is a web series about three juniors in college who face different challenges such as sexuality, drugs, and family issues. Gearing it towards the young adults in their early twenties and supplying a perspective for the current world we live concerning the LGBTQ community has felt like a breath of fresh air in content. The series is releasing on the RecFocus | Films YouTube page and has already started dropping. The first episode came out Thursday, August 22nd at noon. Episodes shall drop weekly on Thursdays at noon. I am hoping to not only create a fanbase for the show but to also create a space where more untold stories can have a chance to shine away from the typically mainstream type of content. An IMDb page has also been created for the show to provide the cast credits for their resumes. If you’re interested in following me on this journey, please feel free to subscribe to the @recfocusfilms YouTube page and/or follow the show’s official Instagram page @reaction.series.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As with making any film or show, I had my fair share of obstacles to deal with in order to see ReAction come to life. These obstacles ranged from minor instances such as having to find catering within 48 hrs to more major issues like an actor dropping out mid-production. No amount of planning can prepare you for an actor or crew member unexpectedly dropping out while in the thick of things. There were multiple days that I had to be a crew of two along with my sister but we still got it done! And for that, I am grateful.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Utilizing ReAction as a springboard platform, I hope to become known for creating a filmmaker revolution in the DMV area. This area has just as much talent as other major, more looked at cities. I feel very honored to meet young creatives, who have not yet been exposed to the entertainment industry, and to provide them with top level experience and treatment that they would normally receive in the day to day in this career field. Our dreams and passions are not as far away as we perceive if we can disconnect our abilities to do them from locations that are physically far away. I know I am young and just starting out in the industry myself but I believe I will make a notable difference one day.
