We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kamaria Moore a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kamaria, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
“SpoiledGrlCo”. is the name of my company. Deciding the name of my company was a hard decision, choosing between something unique and personal to me. Growing up, family and friends nicknamed me “spoiled” because I always wanted everything my way. I wanted a name that resonated with me as well as my customers. Being a Spoiled Grl means to work for your money and to let it work for you. Women sometimes get criticized for caring so much about our appearance although we should all enjoy looking and feeling good. I want my customers to know its good to spoil yourself, you deserve it. As an entrepreneur I know how frustrating it can be putting all your effort into your business/craft we should be able to reward ourselves. People work hard for their money and when they spend it at “SpoiledGrlCo.” I want them to know it was money well spent. My brand represents women empowerment; by offering quality products and great customer service. Empowering women to honor themselves in every way, on and off the clock.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Kamaria. I am a 19 year old entrepreneur/model. I’ve had my small business, “SpoiledGrlCo” for about a year now. I have dabbled in a plethora of hobbies/new skills but lashes is the art I fell in love with. I am consistently working to better my brand quality-wise & diversification. Expanding my knowledge of the lash industry, soon to offer lash extension services. Backstory of how/ why I started my small business, 2021 I wanted to try lash extensions for the first time. Comparable to wearing strip lashes, lash extensions are a more expensive and timely service. So I booked my lash appointment and everything was going well until the 2nd week. My lashes started falling off, and I thought it was bad aftercare on my part so I tried again but unfortunately, I got the same results. I decided to no longer spend my money with expectations not met. I started researching vendors and gaining more knowledge on owning a business. During this time I was in my first year of college for Business Entrepreneurship so I was familiar. My initial mission was to provide a more affordable & convenient alternative to lash extension for my customers. I wanted to supply versatile quality lash styles for all my different customers. Dec 2023 is when I launched and I’m so glad I did! Fast forward, now I’m mastering and learning a new skill to diversify my services. As a lash tech and small business owner, I want to ensure every customer that I care about if they like their product/service ; preserve natural healthy lashes; retention; and quality. Furthermore, I relate to my customers through my own personal experience with the lash industry & I use that by offering personal connections & great service. It’s all a working progress but I’m holding up longer than a bridge.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Back in 2023 when I first started selling lashes, initially I thought this was going to be such a fun and easy transition. I stand corrected. I had difficulty reaching my target audience and it frustrated me. I would see other entrepreneurs in the lash industry excelling and wonder when will it be my turn? Nevertheless, I pivoted and researched different ways to promote my business. I handed out business cards I designed, I would make flyers to keep it fresh. Although I wasn’t receiving the support and attention I desired I didn’t let that stop me and still haven’t. Some days are better than others but I give my all everyday. Understanding that there were risks needed to be taken. I took a leap of faith and betted on myself and everyday I’m grateful for that. It’s nothing like seeing your hard work come to fruition and the positive effect it has on others. Every time a customer smiles or leaves me a good review after receiving their product, I know it was all worth it.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Entitlement mentality, having a sense of deservingness without the action to back it up. Things have always come easy to me, whenever I tried a new skill/hobby I would learn it very quickly and get burnt out on boredom. When there is no longer a challenge I lose interest, this is something I had to unlearn. Although I am grateful for the ability to master new skills quickly and efficiently, it has led me down a hard path of finding my true passion. A person can be good at many things but only truly love and enjoy doing one. ‘What is that skill for you?’ ,I continuously asked myself before my career in lashes. I didn’t want another case of burnout I wanted to commit myself to one skill and put hard work behind becoming the best. Present day. I am still doing that. I’m proud of myself for how far I’ve come since the beginning and for what has yet to come. If anyone can relate to this, don’t get discouraged. There is something for everyone and just because you see other people in the same industry you are in/want to be in doesn’t mean you won’t offer something new and exciting!
