Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kamar Lee. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kamar , thanks for joining us today. Along with taking care of clients, taking care of our team is one of the most important things we can do as leaders. Looking back on your journey, did you have a boss that was really great? Maybe you can tell us about that boss and what made them a wonderful person to work for?
Chef Richard Luppino.
He always pushed me to be my best even when I didn’t think I could do it.Took the time to teach me the correct ways to execute and always get the best results. The best part was the correction and the honesty that was always displayed.
He was a leader that made a difference for a lot of team members. He took time to teach at every chance he had. This is a straight that took time for me to grasp.
Kamar, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am a private chef & Caterer. I got into this industry during covid and emersed myself fully after covid. There became a higher demand for smaller groups that wanted a more intimate setting as “family” gatherings became the norm.
I enjoy cooking seafood, pasta and steaks.Although I am Jamaican I offer so much more . If the item is new to me I will research and definitely deliver a great product. What sets me apart is that I will always go the extra mile to ensure that every event no matter how small or large gets a personal touch.
Catering for large scale events & weddings has now been added to our services that we offer.
Any advice for managing a team?
From this aspect I can definitely say…be a leader and not a boss. I prided myself on being a “boss” for a long time and the results were not successful. I had to try a new approach and be a leader, this wasn’t met with open arms as they wondered what was my endgame or what was going on.
Engaging with your team and trying to have a more human approach was what was needed. Moral was built, productivity flourished and I just overall had a team that wanted more and gave more of themselves.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Coming from a corporate job for over 10 years…I wondered what’s next , what do I do now and where do I go from here?. Kamar you are talented and your personality speaks for itself…is what I told myself. I called friends and contacts let them know what I was now offering as a private chef. From not knowing what my next move was to catering for events on a larger scale to being on mega yachts and actually doing what I love speaks for itself on how resilient I am.
If there are 10 chefs offering the same service, we find our niche & what works for us that sets up apart, That kept us going. Not lowering standards or steps of service for a buck.
Every client is different, every scenario is different. I adjust & adapt accordingly to deliver the best service possible
