We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kamaiah Norris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kamaiah, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I remember the moment I first realized I wanted to pursue a creative path, and it feels like a vivid snapshot in my mind. At just three years old, I was part of a gifted and talented program where my teacher revealed to me that I had a voice—a singer’s voice. It was incredible to discover that this talent was not only a part of me but something I could share with the world. That early experience ignited a passion for performing that has only grown since then.
By the age of eight, I was dancing in a studio, immersing myself in hip hop and contemporary jazz. I loved the freedom and expression that dance offered, and it quickly became another outlet for my creativity. I also developed a fascination with fashion and modeling, largely inspired by my obsession with “America’s Next Top Model.” I remember flipping through magazines and dreaming of the glitz and glamor of the fashion world, knowing deep down that this was a path I wanted to explore.
Acting has always held a special place in my heart as well. I would spend hours watching movies, captivated by the way actors transformed into their characters. I would mimic them, trying to understand the emotions and nuances they brought to life. This passion led me to participate in numerous musicals and plays starting at the age of ten. Each performance felt like stepping into a new world, and I realized that I wanted to make that feeling my career.
Looking back, these experiences were all interconnected, weaving a tapestry of creativity that led me to pursue a professional artistic path. From singing and dancing to acting and fashion, I discovered not just what I loved, but who I was meant to be.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
For those who may not know me, I’m a passionate and dedicated artist based in Indiana, where I’ve carved my path in the creative industry by actively networking and connecting with local talents. My goal is to expand those connections beyond Indiana, reaching out to creatives both nationally and internationally. I believe that collaboration is key to growth, and I’m always eager to engage with others who share my passion.
My artistic endeavors encompass a rich tapestry of modeling, acting, singing, and dancing, each discipline intricately woven into the fabric of my identity. With an unwavering commitment to excellence, I devote countless hours to refining my craft, ensuring that every performance radiates authenticity and passion. My journey has led me to grace the frames of music videos, embrace the stage in theatrical productions, and collaborate with esteemed dance groups throughout Indiana, as well as to participate in numerous prestigious fashion shows that showcase the pinnacle of style and creativity. Each of these experiences has profoundly enriched my artistic expression. What truly distinguishes me is my relentless pursuit of uniqueness in my personal brand; whether captivating audiences on stage or enchanting them before the camera, my mission is to create indelible experiences that resonate deeply within the hearts of those who witness my work.
Clients and collaborators often tell me that I bring a unique vibe to any set. I pride myself on being detail-oriented, and I infuse every role, runway look, and performance with a deep understanding of the story behind it. When I portray a character or perform a song, I want my audience to feel the emotions and narratives woven into the piece. It’s not just about the surface; it’s about connecting with the bigger picture.
I also advocate for body positivity and self-acceptance, proudly showcasing my marks and flaws as symbols of my journey. I believe these imperfections are essential storytellers and deserve to be celebrated.
What truly sets me apart is my unwavering dedication to my craft and my belief in the power of community. I know I am capable of greatness, and I strive to uplift those around me, encouraging everyone to embrace their unique creativity. I am most proud of the connections I’ve built and the positive impact I hope to have on others through my work. I want potential clients, followers, and fans to know that I am not just an artist; I am a storyteller, a collaborator, and an advocate for authenticity in the creative realm.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
One of the pivotal moments in my journey that truly illustrates my resilience came right after I graduated high school. I had dreams of pursuing my passions in the creative arts, but financial constraints meant that I couldn’t attend college. Faced with the reality of supporting myself, I pivoted to a career in culinary arts. It was a practical choice, but it felt like a detour from my true aspirations.
As I navigated this new path, I quickly realized that life was going to require me to be resourceful and adaptable. Balancing a demanding 9-to-5 job in the kitchen while also trying to dedicate time to my creative pursuits was challenging. However, I was determined not to let my job dictate my creativity. I understood that if I wanted to keep my artistic flame alive, I had to take proactive steps.
So, I made it a priority to network and put myself out there in the creative community. I attended local events, collaborated with other artists, and sought out opportunities that allowed me to express myself. Each connection and experience fueled my passion, reminding me of why I started in the first place. I learned to manage my time effectively, carving out hours in my day for rehearsals, photoshoots, and performances.
This journey taught me that resilience is about finding a way forward, even when the odds seem stacked against you. It was challenging to balance my responsibilities while nurturing my dreams, but I refused to give up. I learned that my creative spirit could thrive alongside my day job, and that determination would ultimately lead me where I wanted to go.
Looking back, I’m grateful for those experiences. They not only shaped my work ethic but also deepened my understanding of myself as an artist. I emerged from that period with a clearer vision of my goals and a stronger commitment to my craft. It reinforced my belief that resilience is about adapting, taking action, and never losing sight of what you love.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is the opportunity to express my God-given talents in a way that can positively impact society. I feel a deep sense of responsibility to inspire and uplift, especially young Black women, showing them that we can strive for our dreams and accomplish our goals despite any trials and tribulations we may face. This mission is incredibly important to me, and I am passionate about sharing that message with others through my work.
Every time I perform, create, or share my art, I hope to ignite a spark of confidence and determination in those who resonate with my journey. I take immense joy in expressing myself authentically, allowing my experiences and emotions to shine through in everything I do. My goal is to be a confident role model in today’s society, someone who reflects the beauty and strength of my community.
Knowing that my art can serve as a source of inspiration for others is what drives me. Whether it’s through a powerful performance, an engaging photo shoot, or a heartfelt song, I aim to create moments that encourage individuals to embrace their own uniqueness and pursue their aspirations fearlessly. The possibility of making a positive difference in someone’s life is what makes this creative journey so fulfilling for me.
