Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kam Horton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kam, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today If you had a defining moment that you feel really changed the trajectory of your career, we’d love to hear the story and details.
I have been a Healthcare professional for 33 years. I frequented many salons and spas trying to relax and rejuvenate. I felt that after a hard days work, I deserved to have a quiet space to unwind and enjoy personal services. I went to a local nail salon late after work in hopes of quiet but I had the same experience of loud music, much chatter and toxic smells. I decided on that day that I would create a space where I could go, relax, have natural and non-toxic smell as well as services. I set my goal to retire and open Kazi Blooms.
Kam, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I began to create natural bath care products over 20 years ago because like me, my kids had sensitive skin. I wanted them to enjoy bathing and have fun soaps without the dyes and perfumes. I made my first soap and it helped my children. Others asked me to make soap and it grew over time as I experimented with bath salts, Sheabutter, and other goodies. I decided that when I opened my salon, the products used would be house made and some we would retail in our salon.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I opened my salon right before Covid hit in January 2020. I had a great opening and as weeks passed we were down to zero appointments. Eventually we were forced to close. We hung in there and nearly lost everything because we did not qualify for any funding. I learned that though things seem dark, we should keep the faith , continue to share our brand via tips online on natural selfcare and remind our community that we are here to support one another even when things seem hopeless . Our community remembered us when things settled and now, we have over 600 clients that are registered to our newsletter and we service close to 100 clients every month.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy was our use of social media and staying connected by sharing monthly news with our clients.
