Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kam Franklin. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kam , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue my artistry as a full-time career, I was 5 years old. It was the first time I was handed a microphone. I was at church singing with the children’s choir, and the pastor put the mic in front of each child to sing in a call and response type of way. When he came to me, I didn’t want to give the mic back. It felt like my own lil concert. I fell in love with that feeling in the moment, and I knew it was the life for me after that.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am singer-songwriter, producer, actress, and orator. I’ve fronted the Gulf Coast Soul band, The Suffers, for almost 12 years. I’ve played all over the world, and I spend my free time sharing resources with the next generation of artists. When I’m not doing that, I also serve on the board for HeadCount and the Texas chapter of The Recording Academy.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The library is. an endless resource, especially if you’re broke. There’s a book for everything. There’s access to free computers, and wifi. Some libraries even have free conference rooms and audio recording equipment. Dig into free resources and use them if they exist. My favorite books to recommend to up and coming artists are: “How To Build A Sustainable Music Career and Collect All Revenue Streams” by Emily White and “How to Make It in the New Music Business” by Ari Herstand.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is getting to do. dream job for a living. It’s not easy, but I’m so grateful for this opportunity, and I try not to ever taken it for granted.
