We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalo Sikalumbi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalo below.
Alright, Kalo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
A recent risk I took was traveling to New York to model at NYFW shows. Me and a few friends didn’t know what we were getting into but we made the most out of the situation! I ended up walking for 3 designers at RiseNYFW & 3 designers at Coastal Fashion Week. I’ve been modeling since 2018 & ever since then it was always my dream to travel to New York for fashion week. However, it’s a dream that I’ve constantly been putting off since then & I felt like now, 2023 would be the perfect time for me to go! But with that being said, the things that have come from me going on that trip are amazing. Getting signed to my first modeling agency would have to be the biggest thing to come from it though! To anyone reading this, don’t be afraid to take that risk. It can lead to some of the most rewarding experiences of your life. However, identify your goal, trust yourself & most importantly, stay positive!
Kalo , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kalo Sikalumbi professionally known as Kalothe1, born in Zambia & raised in Atlanta. I’ve always been creative since I was a child, but I never really knew what I wanted to do as a career. As im doing this interview i still dont know what that one solid thing will be but i do believe its gonna be whatever makes me happy. Being surrounded by so much art and growing up in the digital era i had a lot of influences. However, i would say music is one of those things I always felt was going to be in my life forever. But what really kickstarted my career in entertainment was a phone call that I got from Barbizon Modeling and Acting School. It was a hot summer day, I was doing the trash & all of a sudden I got a call from an agent saying they’re interested in me auditioning to become a model or actor. To me personally, it sounded too good to be true, but my parents insisted we follow through with it. I killed the audition & started my classes for Barbizon a month later! After completing my classes in early 2019, i became stagnant because i didnt really know what my next move was. However, over the next few months i did my research and found a casting call for Walk Fashion show. This ended up being the very first fashion show i walked in. A week later, I got called to be on set to be a background actor for a TV show on BET & the rest is history!
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
You know I always get asked what my goal is with all of this & it is simply to help people & grow. I found that after hitting certain goals you set for yourself, it only feels rewarding for a certain amount of time & then its like alright what’s next? But with that being said, I always feel so fulfilled & grateful when I realize that even if I don’t reach those certain goals, I am still growing year by year. No matter what I do, I just want to grow & be better than I was before! How can I lose with that mindset?
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect would definitely have to be seeing the final product of a project you worked on being shown to the world. I will never forget the feeling that I got when the music video I appeared in with Rod Wave & Lil Durk released. It feels good to show people that you’re really out here putting in the work. Always push yourself to prove people wrong!
