We recently connected with Kallie Carr and have shared our conversation below.
Kallie, appreciate you joining us today. We love asking folks what they would do differently if they were starting today – how they would speed up the process, etc. We’d love to hear how you would set everything up if you were to start from step 1 today.
If I could start my photography business over, I would disregard the advice I received initially regarding my moody photography style. Staying true to myself from the outset would have brought me greater contentment, even if it meant attracting fewer clients. Looking back at my photography journey, I recognize room for growth and improvement; while sessions were satisfactory, they lacked a personal tone. Now though, I want to be sure that personal contentment is the top priority while delivering my client’s needs at the same time. I find comfort in embracing my ever-evolving yet consistent moody aesthetic. I’m reaching the point where others opinions hold less sway and I want to attract individuals who value my artistic vision and have respect for it.
Throughout my career, I’ve struggled with the notion that my talent is not receiving the recognition it deserves. Even after putting my heart and soul into creating something, there are moments when my efforts feel somewhat unappreciated. We often undervalue our work, frequently compromising on rates and negotiating deals to secure clients unnecessarily. This practice can be draining, eroding energy and enthusiasm, highlighting the necessity for clearer boundaries. Reflecting on dealing with this cycle I’ve had to improve my assertiveness in setting boundaries and valuing my work appropriately.
I know I can’t be the only one who has gone through this. Artists dedicate themselves to producing wonders for their clients, yet there are times when the praise they receive doesn’t fully reflect the monumental dedication they put in.
Remember, as an artist, your voice is your most powerful tool. Just like painters who leave their mark on portraits with distinctive styles, photographers have the freedom to express themselves in ways that resonate with their innermost selves. By prioritizing your artistic vision and letting your authenticity shine through your work, you are not just creating images but weaving stories that reflect the essence of who you are. I think that’s what is so beautiful about every artistic community, our work reflects our souls.
To other artists who may be struggling with the same thing I encourage you to continue to evolve, experiment, and refine your craft, always guided by the compass of your true artistic spirit. Your journey is a tapestry of self-expression and creativity, woven with threads of passion, authenticity, and unwavering dedication. Stay true to yourself, and the right clients who appreciate and celebrate your unique voice will undoubtedly find their way to you. Trust in your artistry, believe in your vision, and let your creativity soar to new heights.
Kallie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey there, I’m Kallie (she/her) – an Edgar Allen Poe enthusiast, video game lover, and true crime buff. I’m always on the lookout for new stories to capture through my lens. My passion for photography lies in telling stories and evoking emotions through my images. Inspired by the works of Poe and other deep poets, my style is moody and thought-provoking. For me, every photo should capture the essence of the moment and tell a unique story.
Whether it’s a couple’s wedding day or a brand’s story, I am devoted to creating stunning and meaningful photographs that will be cherished forever.
My photography business mainly specializes in elopements and business branding. I have been a photographer since 2017.
And it has been an amazing journey so far. I love capturing the raw emotions and candid moments that happen during elopements and helping businesses tell their brand story through beautiful imagery.
Starting my own business was not an easy task, but it has been incredibly rewarding. I have learned so much about not only photography, but also about marketing, branding, and running a business. One of my favorite things about being a business owner is the freedom and flexibility it allows me.
Of course, there are challenges that come with running your own business. It can be stressful at times, and there is always more work to be done. However, the satisfaction of creating something that is truly your own makes it all worth it.
I am excited to see where this journey takes me next and to continue capturing beautiful moments for my clients.
Whether it’s a couple’s wedding day or a brand’s story, I am devoted to creating stunning and meaningful photographs that will be cherished forever.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I recently relocated to Texas to pursue new opportunities and my ideal clientele. Transitioning from one state to another has presented its challenges, especially moving from an established client base to starting afresh. Nevertheless, this journey has been a thrilling one, brimming with novel experiences and unexplored possibilities. As I adjust to my new environment, I am uncovering hidden treasures and distinctive prospects that Texas offers. While constructing a new client base from the ground up has its hurdles, each obstacle is an opportunity for personal growth and learning.
With determination and commitment, I am optimistic about connecting with my target clients and establishing a flourishing professional network in this dynamic state. Although the transition may seem daunting, the promise of success and fulfillment makes the endeavor truly rewarding.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I appreciate timeless storytelling, yet I also enjoy adding quirky elements and ensuring they endure over time. I strive to accommodate everyone, particularly those who are looking for a one-of-a-kind experience. If tasked with photographing a Renaissance festival wedding, my goal would be to craft an immersive experience that authentically captures the essence of the era, prioritizing authenticity over clichés.
A couple dreams of taking their engagement session at an arcade or music fest, and I’m here to capture those unforgettable memories. My mission? To be there for all the rebels, the offbeat souls, the geeks – basically, the cool misfits like me! The world of photography is lacking in this very thing and is in need of individuality, and that’s exactly the vibe I’m offering for fellow free spirits. I want to capture those extraordinary moments in all their one-of-a-kind glory. This is my mission with my work is to be the photographer that’s down for the weird shit
