Kalisa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. So, let’s start with a hypothetical – what would you change about the educational system?
If I could change anything about the educational system it would be to let kids find themselves and figure out who they want to be in life and what they’re passionate about. Teach them about generational wealth, credit and money management something that would benefit them long term so they can be advanced and settled into their lives when they’re old enough instead of getting old and playing catch up when it could have already been taught in school. That would be life changing and add value to the school system and if you were a child that chose to go to college I would place programs in place to help you figure out how to pay back student loans. Honestly if it was up to me school would be free!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
My name is Kalisa. I go by Kay. I am a full time mother of 2 kids plus 1 business as I like to call my business my baby as well because I gave birth to it and work very hard at trying to make it a dream come true, which takes a lot of hard work and dedication especially when you’re doing it alone! I’m a very hard working woman who tries her best to be the best at what I do with little to no support. It definitely gets hard however I’m determined to go as far as I see my business taking me and find lots of pleasure in working for myself and doing something I love, as I reflect on my past I can say I’m truly proud of myself and giving up will never be a thought of mine! How I got into the Body Contouring Industry is with both of my kids I had C- Sections, with the second C- Section the doctor cut my muscle which caused damage to the way my stomach sits. I’ve never been a fan of surgery so I started researching ways to get it fixed without having to get an actual surgery and that’s how I came across Non Invasive/Smart Lipo. I started my business in 2019 renting out a suite in someone’s salon as business started to grow for me. I then got my own 1 room suite and kept expanding from there. I started selling my own weight loss products like my Klassy Curves 10 Day Detox tea which has been proven by clients to help you lose pounds along with my Klassy Curves By K Hot Cream which has also been proven through client testimonials and pics to help you get those abs in ! My number 1 selling product is my waist trainers. I also expanded so much that I was able to start helping women by renting out suites to women who were in the same shoes as me when I first started and didn’t have an actual business location which is vital to your business! After being in business after a year and 6 months I knew it was time for me to learn how to teach others so I could pass the torch as I’ve always loved to help others and is one of the main reasons I started my business to become a servant to my community by helping others, So I started Body Contouring Training Classes. I am now teaching other women how to become successful business entrepreneurs! Since then I have also added new health services such as vaginal steaming and foot detoxing! What sets me apart from others is I’m genuine about what I do and my training classes are a bit more extensive than others so not only do you leave with your Body Contouring Certification you leave with multiple certifications and knowledge about how to start and legalize your business with mentorship available. We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
The lessons that I had to unlearn is don’t follow your passion, follow your effort. When becoming a small business entrepreneur you can get overwhelmed really fast by over analyzing everything, trying to be perfect while you feel like no one is noticing your hard work. I’m here to tell you the claps won’t get loud until the world sees you how they fit to be successful and success is in everyone its just up to us to utilize the gift we have and believe me everyone is watching even if your not hearing the claps don’t get discouraged have faith and keep working! Me on the other hand I’m more of a self reserved type of person so social media is really hard for me but with business you have to be ready to sacrifice old habits and step out your comfort zone and go as hard as you can without overthinking and overworking yourself. And honestly, I have yet to completely come out of my shell. It takes time but I can say I’m getting better than what I used to be and really word of mouth/ client referrals is what keeps my business going. Long story short give it all you’ve got but take care of yourself mentally as well!
Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
For Mother’s Day I marketed to mother’s with daughter’s and did a Queen & Princess pampering special, marketing to kids ages 3 to 12. Mind you, I’m very good with kids but had never done anything business wise with the kids besides braiding little girls hair and with me having a daughter myself who I love to pamper and pamper with came this idea. I didn’t know if it was going to work or if I would get any sales but I took my chance and let’s just say It was a hit and I will be keeping the service permanently! The way I made those babies smile was so priceless to me and I found I truly desire working with children. People saw how good I painted those kids’ nails and were asking me to paint theirs so that added even more income. So with that being said if you have an idea that you would like to put into action don’t sleep on it use every gift you have to give so that you can reap from it!
