We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalipso Freeze. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalipso below.
Kalipso, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Being born and raised in a small part of North Carolina though gave me a blissful imaginative childhood filled with unwavering adventures, it also years later confined me in a predicament where I knew I had to leave my old home behind, to create a new one for myself where the desires that was blessed upon my heart can bloom and grow.
The arts were within me way before my mom passed from this earth when I was just 3 years of age, shaping my life for years to come. Death was something I had to experience and overcome at an early age. Though it was hard getting over the death of my mother, I was still blessed with an abundant childhood overall.
My talents from what my grandmother told me began with me dancing. She told me that by the age of two I was already dancing, due to mimicking what I saw the older folks do when they used to all get together at my great grandmother’s house to party. I also remember a story she told me when she, my mom, and I were at Pizza Inn the day I started dancing to the music being played from the jukebox. She said that the manager came by, saw me dancing and was very amused. My grandma said they felt embarrassed, but the manager said “NO, LET HIM DANCE! This little fella needs to be on TV!”
However, years later I started to shy away from dancing in front of people. Maybe it was the attention that I wasn’t ready for, but even with me running away from one passion, another emerged. By the time I was already in first grade I developed a huge talent for art, sketching, and painting. My grandma said it sparked around the same time I started dancing. I used to run around telling the older folks to draw me this, and draw me that, and I would mimic their drawings the best way that I knew how. I guess over time, I actually had gotten better. Better enough to win multiple art shows, and awards, and to be mentioned in my hometown newspaper on multiple occasions. Around this time, I started making small comic/graphic books and taking them to school to let my friends see. From this time on, I knew I wanted to become some kind of artist/creator. I heard my mom always wanted to be an actress and even wanted to be in a Freddy Krueger movie as the one to take him out in the end. Unfortunately, my grandparents didn’t have the funds to make her dream a reality.
Being a kid who had an overactive imagination, I had always acted out every scene I’d involve my toys in while playing alone. I was a very dramatic kid, and literally became a kid writer from my fourth-grade year to my sixth. Seeing how my friends reacted to my homemade books made me even more eager to be in the entertainment industry, leading me to further involve myself into school plays, and participating in church praise and worship services. However, even this passion would temporarily leave me to evolve into another. MUSIC PRODUCTION!
Being raised around music and growing up in a church obviously shaped my ear for the craft, but in middle school of 2005 I started experiencing emotional issues, especially while going through puberty and dealing with my newfound fixation to girls. The art I was creating wasn’t relieving me from the frustrating emotions in my mind, so I started falling asleep to the music from my radio to quiet my own mind. However, this wasn’t the expected music people would think I would listen to, it was the pop/rock music I would listen to on MTV & VH1 as I got ready for school. Eventually, one day I just woke up to music just floating in my head that I never heard before. I would soon remember the melodies from my dreams, only to wake up, add words to them, and turn them into entire songs.
Fast forward to today now out of North Carolina, I’m embracing all of my talents of old and new. My mother wanted to be the star, so I’m not going to stop until I feel like I made it for the both of us. I’ve been dealt a great hand of trials and tribulations, but I’ve yet to take my foot of the gas. I know Disney needs more writers and directors, maybe I can be their big break one day!
Just like my mother as a child, being on tv did cross my mind. Unfortunately, just like my mother, my guardians didn’t have the funds to send me away at the time either, so I had to let my dreams of being a child actor die. Yet, I do believe everything happens for a reason, and I do believe that reason spared me from going through the same mistakes, and misfortunes other child stars went through being young, and naive. As of now, I’m ready to give my all. Give me a crowd of 2,000 and I bet I still won’t fold. I’m too confident in my skills, and talents to doubt myself anymore. I’m ready to give the world the art, and passion it deserves. Either that, or my name isn’t KALIPSO K. FREEZE!

Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
Initially I live well below my means. I live out of my car, and work seasonal jobs to cut down extra bills, so I can use the extra money to invest in everything I need. I utilize my gym membership for a shower when I need it, and have literally sacrificed my love life, and the club life to stay vigilant towards my goals. I don’t need the latest, or fancy anything, unless I need to incorporate it in my projects.

Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! The grants I can qualify for to help me produce the short films I’m aiming to make. I didn’t learn about film grants until 2021
