We recently connected with Kalia Flores and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kalia, thanks for joining us today. Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
I personally manage my own social media. I created my business off of it and as of now like to keep it 100% true to myself! To me I love being able to post my content and have my clients find something relatable to it, it creates an icebreaker when they come in to get serviced because I show my true authentic self. If I ever get to the point of needing someone to manage it I will give up the freedom when I know it’ll benefit me rather than not. I say you’ll know when it’s right to have someone else manage it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kalia! I’m a 22 year old hairstylist in Southern California who built my clientele off of referrals and social media. I was surrounded by the beauty world since I was young and went into cosmetology pretty soon after I graduated high school. I got my license and started in a salon 2 months later. A year and a half later started my own business booth renting. I offer layered cuts, dimensional color and even vivid services. I think what sets me apart from others is I make people feel welcome. I’m a friend to everyone who walks in the door and my goal is to provide a listening ear, comfort, and honesty. I’m most proud of the person I became while doing the job. I became more confident, more sociable and more productive. I want people to know I’m here to be more than just a stylist, I love having genuine connections with people and making them feel their best selves.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
When I started my career I started in the corporate world. A corporate salon that was comfortable to me because I had started there in retail. It felt like I was going to be stuck there. That’s where I learned that to make progress it has to be uncomfortable. I found a salon that I felt like could be home and help me grow in ways that I couldn’t in the corporate life. I moved an hour away from where I built my clientele and had to start all over.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I love social media. Without it I wouldn’t be where I am. I started without trying, but as soon as I found something that worked I stuck with it. My best advice is to post. Post anything that sparks joy in your life. Try things out, and see what sticks. It could happen over night or it might take a few months, but try everything and don’t be afraid of what people are thinking.
