We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kali Mangual-keegan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kali, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s jump to the end – what do you want to be remembered for?
I aspire to leave my family’s Culinary legacy behind, over 100 years worth of recipes that I have been fortunate enough to share with my family, friends, guests and customers thus far. I believe (& hope) I will be remembered as a hard-working mother with ambitions & dreams that have always been larger than life. I began practicing/feeding my family on the weekends at the ripe ol’ age of 8 years young & haven’t stopped since. I’ve accomplished a lot in my 42 years but have so much more to give!!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a mother & wife 1st. A passionate & driven woman that has been through many difficult times and still managed to stay focused on the ultimate goal -where I am now & where I am going…
I run a small catering business specializing in Puerto Rican food;
Tata’s Boricua Kitchen.
I threw a few ideas my baby sister’s way and that’s what we decided on. Tata was our paternal grandmother & a huge source of love & support in not only our lives but our children’s and well, anyone who had the pleasure of being in her presence. Not only have I been blessed with an array of customers who enjoy my traditional go-to recipes, but many that have also challenged me in my culinary journey. I also like to consider myself a liquid chef as I’ve been known to mix up a delectable and unique cocktail when the occasion calls for it. I’m very proud to say I am confident that anyone will tell you I give all my love, whether I’m in the kitchen or behind the bar and it has definitely made me stand out in every establishment I’ve had the opportunity to work with as well as my own events. Word of mouth is definitely a big deal in a small town and word on the street is Kali’s got the goods! I look forward to getting a trailer in 2025 so I can take this show on the road. As far as I’m concerned the possibilities are endless & I’m always looking for new opportunities to share the Puerto Rican love!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
The key for me has always been keeping it 1000. In every aspect of life. That’s something my father instilled in me a long time ago and it has always stayed with me. Communication, honesty and integrity is everything. You’d be surprised how willing people are to compromise as long as you are being completely transparent. If you cannot provide something for them, tell them immediately-do not waste anybody’s valuable time, yourself included.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Stepping into the light and out of my comfort zone. Speaking to people daily, even if it’s at the gas station, I always have stickers and business cards with me and I’m happy to give a quick rundown of the services that I can provide.
