We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaley McKee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kaley , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
My business partner and friend, Jessica, and I met while working in a long-term care facility. Through informal conversation, we realized that we had a similar drive to pursue new ways of making healthcare more convenient for patients and providers. With that parallel mindset, we evolved Vitality Health Services. Jessica and I have a collective 28 years of nursing experience. However, it did not include experience in establishing our own practice and naturally that was a challenge. Perseverance is key and the knowledge gained was worth the challenge! As we continue to learn, then we will continue to grow.
And as nurses, we understand that healthcare is inevitably changing and evolving, but sometimes change is hard. Our mission is to embrace the change with care and compassion while offering more convenient and comfortable services in a way that encompasses all types of patients.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Vitality Health Services is a mobile phlebotomy practice that makes lab work more convenient for health care providers and their patients. This is especially true for older adults or handicapped individuals who might not be able to get to a lab to have their bloodwork completed. We also provide services for large corporate entities and do corporate blood draws. Our services include routine blood draws and UAs, healthcare facility draws, STAT draws, pre-op lab draws, wound culture collection, port draws, early gender-reveal DNA testing, PRP draws, and DOT urine collections.
With Vitality Health Services, patients and doctors can expect high-quality care. We ensure patients get the lab work they need promptly, and doctors get the results quickly so they can make the necessary treatment decisions.
Our nursing experience reflects the knowledge required to meet our standard of care. Jessica is a licensed practical nurse with her IV certification and CPT. She has experience in LTC, family medicine, endocrinology, wound care, rheumatology, and internal medicine. I am a registered nurse with experience in ER, outpatient care, cardiac rehab, urgent care, OR/ambulatory services, acute and skilled care, LTC, and nursing management. Patients can expect high-quality care with Vitality Health Services.
Putting training and knowledge aside, what else do you think really matters in terms of succeeding in your field?
The definition of a nurse is a person trained to care for the sick or infirm. However, it is so much more than training and knowledge. Nursing is compassion and patience and selflessness. To be a nurse is to serve and the reward is far greater than just a paycheck.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
Our most influential entrepreneurial move was to get connected with other mobile phlebotomy entities. This community was vital to our success. The knowledge gained was huge! The experience and guidance of these other mobile phlebotomy practices was our greatest resource.
