We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kalendula Rose . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kalendula below.
Kalendula , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
I started playing the harp as a child. Back then, I had big dreams and no one yet telling me, “you can’t” . As the years progressed and as people came in and out of my life, I’ve come in contact with people wanting to squelch my ability to hold onto childhood dreams. But, my dreams never died and I’ve always held them close. My musical journey and vision has become more clear, but it’s still something I’m seeking to find in it’s entirety. And who knows, maybe artists and creatives are always seeking. But, I think that’s a beautiful thing. Looking back at the musical life I’ve lived, I could say ‘“I wish I did this, this, and this differently” but, all my experiences made me who I am today, and I’m stronger and more assured in my musical abilities than I was all those years ago, and I’m still growing. I think my biggest obstacle and perhaps my greatest teacher has been my own mind. Self doubt and not having the confidence to really try to ‘make it’ has held me back. But, I think my mind has also been a great teacher because I’m aware of my thought processes and I’ve been working to change them over the years. I do have confidence in my abilities now, and I find that mental journey beautiful as well.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I honestly can’t remember not wanting to be a musician. I’ve had that desire in my heart since I was very young. My music has evolved over the years and I’m finally at a place of contentment with knowing what I want my music to be and how I want it to sound. I am a songwriter and singer as well as harpist.
I want my songs to touch the human heart. I want those who listen to my music to feel deeply. I want them to feel peace from the sounds of my songs.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Having a creative mind brings reward and hardship. The human mind is a fascinating subject and I think the study of a creative mind would be most interesting. It’s rewarding to be able to see beauty first and to feel deeply , even though sometimes these rewarding qualities can bring pain. But, I wouldn’t have it any other way. It’s rewarding when you channel that pain correctly and develop something beautiful from it, as in my case, writing songs. Over the years, many of my songs have been written because of something painful. Its rewarding to me to be able to create beauty out of pain.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think society is caught up in the superficial and the materialistic. Money and power are themes in our society. What would do us good, is to pull back and stop running in circles trying to gain. Focus on love, love for yourself and all living things. If everyone focused on love, we would all have a special kind of power, one that money does not buy. My creativity stems from wanting to feel love and beauty. So, from my perspective, if we all focused our energy on these things, our society would appreciate creativity and art on a grand scale and hold a special place for it in the workings of society.
