We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaleigh Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kaleigh thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s talk about innovation. What’s the most innovative thing you’ve done in your career?
I believe that Village Boards KC is bringing something completely new to the Kansas City area in regards to charcuterie and grazing tables. Our work not only highlights seasonal produce, but the best florals in the area.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
The first grazing table I ever assembled was for my sister’s bridal shower in February of 2022. I received so much positive feedback after that event and decided to go out on a limb and start Village Boards KC less than a week later. I have always loved cooking and baking as well as beautiful design – this business allows me to tap into all of those things and do something that truly brings me joy. I am a former educator and love being able to teach workshops and share my charcuterie knowledge with people all over the metro.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Not only is social media the primary form of marketing I use for Village Boards KC, but it is also a place where I have found an incredibly supportive community of other small business owners across the country. I have been able to share my knowledge with other charcuterie artists in other states as well as learn from those who have been in business a lot longer than I have.
My biggest advice for other small business owners just starting out is to do you best to connect with other people in your niche through social media. Businesses ebb and flow and when things get hard or you have questions that are specific to your kind of work, it is so nice to have people to reach out to who can support you!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
I would say that it is just extremely important to stay true to who you are and always aim to provide the best product for your client. If you can do those two things, I believe that customers will keep coming back to support what you are putting out into the world.
