We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kaleb Sanders a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kaleb thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happy as a creative professional? Do you sometimes wonder what it would be like to work for someone else?
I couldn’t be more excited and happy about my career as an artist and creative. There hasn’t been a single moment where I’ve reflected on my life and thought that I’d rather be pursuing a ‘regular’ job. I have no regrets over the path that I’ve chosen because, before I dove into music full time, I had spent time working in different fields experiencing the 9-5 life and quickly realized that it wasn’t for me at all. All I wanted to do was write and make music and sing that music in front of people. Have there been hard times and moments of struggle? Of course, but I would never trade it for anything.

Kaleb, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Originally from Florida, I came to Nashville five years ago to pursue a career as a singer and songwriter. I chose the music industry because at my core, I felt this was the only path for me. I come from a long line of singers, musicians and music lovers, so this calling quite literally runs in my blood, and I couldn’t be happier about that. What separates me from others chasing this music dream is that I don’t box myself in to any sort of sonic identity. I’ll always be myself and still ever-changing, and my music reflects that. This ride has and does take a ton of hard work, and I’m most proud of how much of that I’ve invested into getting to where I am today. I’m also proud of the ‘why’ behind my music – it’s the pure love for the process of creating music, singing it live and watching other people connect with it.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think that the most rewarding part of being an artist is being any to get up in front of people and watch the message behind my music connect with the audience. Experiencing that means the world to me, because I had never really expected it. I created music simply because I loved it, but watching listeners relate to the music along with me makes me so much more appreciative of what I get to do everyday.

Have you ever had to pivot?
Before moving to Nashville to pursue music full time, I had what most would consider the ‘comfortable path.’ I had a position in a construction company that would promise a steady income and a good foundation to build a family and support it properly. As thankful as I was, I knew that just wasn’t for me, and I made the pivot to pursue music full time. I quit that job, moved to Nashville and relied solely on a gig-based income while I worked on my artistry. Although it was scary, going all-in was the best choice I could’ve made, and it taught me to trust my instincts. Even if things hadn’t worked out, like signing a record deal, I would still be doing this because it’s what makes me happy.
